Steve Backley OBE

Steve Backley OBE retired from the Javelin after the 2004 Olympics in Athens. This ended a stellar career, which included medals from the Olympic Games, European and World Championships, Commonwealth Games and World Cups.

In 1995 he was awarded an MBE, which was upgraded to an OBE in 2002 for his sporting achievements.

ATHLETICS

For almost two decades, Steve Backley was one of Team GB’s most consistent and successful athletes, with a plethora of medals and three world records to his name.

Starting his career in 1987, he won the European Junior Championships before a home crowd in Birmingham. He would back this up by winning a silver medal at the 1988 World Junior Championships, beaten only by Victor Ovchinikov.

But just one year later, he would be standing on some of the biggest senior podiums in the world. Between 1999 and 2004, he would go on to win:

– two silver and one bronze Olympic medals
– two silver medals at the World Championships
– four gold medals at the European Championships
– two gold medals at the Universiade
– three gold medals at the World Cup
– two gold, one silver and one bronze medal at the European Cup
– three gold and one silver medal at the Commonwealth Games

Winning his final gold medal at the 2002 European Championships made him the first British athlete in history to achieve four consecutive gold medals.

RETIREMENT

Since retiring, Steve has showcased his natural sporting ability by partaking in the third series of Dancing on Ice in 2008. He has also appeared as a personality on entertainment programmes such as Pointless Celebrities (2022), Great British Menu (2012), A Question of Sport (1991-2009), and Ready, Steady, Cook (2008).

He hasn’t completely abandoned sport and is a regular commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live, covering major athletics championships. He is an integral part of the BBC TV commentary. He has covered Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth games, was seen running with the 2012 Olympic torch, and appeared in British Airways Magazine, The Metro Columnist, and Evening Standard.

He has published several books, including The Champion in All of Us: 12 Rules for Success (2012), The Little Book of Property (2018) and The Little Book of Inspiration (2008).

He has also stretched his entrepreneurial legs, building businesses including iPerform and BackleyBlack. BackleyBlack, which he runs with fellow athlete Roger Black, provides training for companies based on their elite sporting experience to deliver maximum performance.
