Since that day, Tommy Walsh has gone from strength to strength, filming 12 series of Ground Force. Along with co-presenter Charlie, Tommy filmed an American version of the show for BBC America.
After the show, he took on a new challenge, pushing himself and his team right to the edge by going beyond anything he had previously attempted on TV: the task of building a new home in 60 days for £60,000. It was built in the most eco and cost-friendly manner as possible, with construction materials taking into account eco benefits, cost, availability and ease of use.
He has gone on to present a number of television programmes, including Space Invaders (1999), The Reclaimers (2001), Challenge Tommy Walsh (2002-04), Ultimate Workshop (2005), Eco House (2007), Fix Your House For Free (2010), Clean It, Fix It (2021-2023), and Homes Under the Hammer (2022).
He has also appeared as a guest star on entertainment programmes such as Blankety Blank (2001-02), Hell’s Kitchen (2009), The Gadget Show (2010), Holidaying With Jane McDonald (2020), Morning Live (2020-21), The Last Leg (2022), and Pointless Celebrities (2013-22)
His success in landscaping and as a presenter has given Tommy a wide range of opportunities to expand his knowledge and provide wisdom to others. Over the years he has published several books, including:
2000 – Ground Force: Practical Garden Projects
2001 – Ground Force: Garden Handbook
2001 – Tommy Walsh’s DIY Guide
2002 – Basic DIY
2002 – DIY Survival
2004 – Bathroom DIY
2004 – Kitchen DIY
2004 – Living Spaces DIY
2004 – Outdoor DIY
Tommy underwent treatment and surgery for throat cancer and has since become involved in raising awareness of early prevention. Together with Alan Titchmarsh, he joined an NHS campaign to get the country talking about bowel cancer screening. “As a cancer survivor myself, I know how important diagnosing cancer early is. But I didn’t know that detecting bowel cancer at the earliest stage makes you up to nine times more likely to be successfully treated.”
Tommy has a successful relationship with www.tradessupermarket.com, offering fantastic offers and tips and tricks for the tradesman, has been the voice of Wicks’ adverts, and has had a long-running campaign with Direct Line. He is also a popular guest at garden centres and store openings, and is a frequent star at BBC Gardeners World Live and Good Homes Shows.
