Courtney Sweetman-Kirk’s first taste of professional football was as a junior in Leicester City’s youth team. She then moved up to Leicester City’s senior team in 2008, where she stayed until 2011, making 54 appearances and scoring 33 goals.
After Leicester, she moved to Coventry City, scoring 15 goals in 35 apeparances; then Lincoln/Notts County in 2013, scoring one goal in nine appearances; Doncaster Rovers Belles in 2014, scoring 40 goals in 43 appearances; Everton in 2017, scoring 5 goals in 18 appearances; and then Liverpool in 2018, scoring 10 goals in 30 appearances.
Her latest signing was with Sheffield United in 2020, where she stayed for three years, scoring 25 goals in 60 appearances.
Courtney was named the FA WSL 2 Players’ Player of the Year 2015 whilst she was at Doncaster Rovers Belles. She was also Everton’s top goal scorer in her first season with the club in 2015. Whilst playing with Coventry City, she was part of the team who won the 2013 Birmingham FA County Cup.
Courtney made her debut for the England national under-23 team in 2013, and went on to help the team win the 2013 World University Games in Russia, thanks to her hat trick against Ireland.
In 2024, Courtney announced her retirement from professional football, saying:
“I’ve been a professional for ten years and playing football for even longer. I’ve spent so much of my life living out of bags. It’s amazing, I’ve travelled the world but for me, I thought it was time now to come back to base a little bit, get a bit more settled. Juggling the media and the football for the last three years has been amazing but it’s been a lot. I think, going forward now, the media and ambassadorial stuff is the route I really want to pursue.”
Over the last few years, Courtney has turned her hand to match reporting, commentating, and punditry. She has worked with channels including TalkSPORT, Sky Sports, Amazon Prime, Sky Showcase, ITV, STV, DAZN Worldwide, and YouTube. She has commentated on a range of football games, ranging from friendlies to the EURO Championships, the Women’s Champions League, Premier League, and the Saudi Professional League.
She has worked as a commentator, reporter, and analyser on Gilette Soccer Saturday (2021-present), Amazon Prime: Premier League (2021-23), Sky Bet English Football League (2022-23), and ITV Sport: EFL Highlights (2022-23). She has made appearances on Granada Reports (2018), The Women’s Football Show (2016) and Hotshots (2004), and was a presenter at the 2024 EFL Awards.
Courtney is now an ambassador for Utilita and their ‘Football Rebooted’ campaign. Founded by former England goalkeeper David James, the campaign helps promote the economical, environmental, and social benefits of football, and helps to understand the challenges being faced by clubs and venues across the UK.
Courtney became an official ambassador in 2023, championing its power to enable access to sport for all young people. The campaign promotes the use of football boots being recycled to help with the cost-of-living crisis, to aid those unable to afford football boots, and to make an impact when it comes to the environment.
In 2023, Courtney spoke at the Black In Sport Summit, tackling the discrimination and underrepresentation of black people in sport. Fellow speakers included Sky Sports presenter Mike Wedderburn, journalist Anita Abayomi, Team GB athletes Lutalo Muhammad, and Imani-Lara Lansiquot, British Cycling Board Member Lloyd Grose, and fellow Great British Speaker, broadcaster Carina White.
