Carl Miller analyses data with immersive, first-hand reporting to understand how our lives our changing on a social and political scale. He does this by visiting information warfare bases, interviewed fake news merchants, exposed autocratic states, met Taiwan’s digital democrats, re-created himself from hidden data, and become involved in the struggle to control an online assassination market

His investigations blend the data and analysis found with real people and their lived experiences. He does all of this to help us understand how the digital revolution is causing traditional power structures to evolve, and how it has affected our lives in ways we may not be aware of.

In 2012, Carl co-founded the Centre for the Analysis of Social Media at Demos, the first UK think tank institute dedicated to the digital world. Through this institution, he has written over 20 major research studies on topics including conspiracy theories, cybercrime, digital politics, internet governance, online electoral inference, and radicalisation. He does this by analysing politics, tech, cybercrime, war, journalism, hackers, hate speech, automation, and social and political power.

Since 2019, Carl has been serving as an expert advisor on social media for the Care Quality Commission (CQC),as an external advisor on the cross-governmental review on the use of data science in public,  and for the Civil Contingencies Secretariat of the UK Government. He is also a member of the Independent Digital Ethics Panel for Policing.

He is also a Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College London, a Fellow at the Global Initiative against Transnational Organised Crime, a Visiting Fellow at the Department of War Studies at King’s College London, a member of the RUSI States Threats Task Force, an Associate of the Imperial War Museum, a Senior Fellow at the Institute of Strategic Dialogue, a member of the advisory board of the Global Network on Extremism and Technology, a member of the Challenging Pseudoscience group at the Royal Institution, and a member of the society board of the British Computing Society.

Carl’s expertise has seen him contribute writings to the likes of The Economist, The Sunday Times, The Times Literary Supplement, Literary Review, Wired, New Scientist, The Telegraph, The Atlantic, and The Guardian, on topics including civic hackers, deep fakes, sex robots, vegan meat, cyber warfare, information warfare, democracy, illegal wildlife trade, COVID conspiracies, bots, silicon valley, online habits, elections, digital democracy, and social media.

In 2018, he released his book The Death of the Gods: The New Global Power Grab, examining the new centres of power and control in the 21st Century; it went on to win the 2019 Transmission Prize.
