Adam Peaty’s first major swimming success came when he took part in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. He won gold in the 100-metre breaststroke and the medley relay, as well as a silver in the 50 metres. This continued at the European Championships of the same year, where he won four golds and was a driving force behind Team GB’s best European performance in history.
He continued this success in 2015 when he set a world record in the 100 metres at the British Championships, becoming the first man to ever swim it under 58 seconds; he set a new world record in the 50 metres at the World Championships; and successfully defended his titles to win another four medals at the 2016 European Championships.
At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, he won the 100-metre breaststroke, smashing his own world record in the meantime, followed by a silver medal in the 4 x 100-metre medley relay. He then won three golds at the 2017 World Championships, breaking another of his world records.
The 2018 Commonwealth Games saw him successfully defend his 100-metre title, and the silver in the 50 metres and 4 x 100 medley relay; he then took home four golds in the European Championship, becoming the first-ever British three-time quadruple champion. In 2019, he defended his 50 metre and 100-metre titles at the World Championships, again breaking his own record, also claiming gold in the men’s 4 x 100-metre relay and bronze in the mixed 4 x 100-metre medley relay.
In 2020, he broke the 100-metre short course world record twice within just two weeks at the International Swimming League contest; he then retained his Olympic title at the Tokyo Olympic Games, won gold in the mixed medley team and silver in the men’s medley relay. At the 2021 British Swimming trials, he won the 100-metre breaststroke, giving him the 20 fastest times ever swam in the event, and just a month later, he claimed another four golds at the European Championships. He went on to win the 50-meter breaststroke final at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
In 2024, he competed at the Paris Olympic Games where he attempted to defend his breaststroke title. He was just pipped to the post and claimed silver in the 100m breaststroke, coming fourth in the men’s 4x100m medley relay.
