Ralf began karting at the age of three, with his parents having bought a home next to a karting track. He has spoken about growing up in a poor family, with he and brother Michael sharing a bedroom sleeping on a mattress on the floor.
His first major karting success came when he clinched the NRW Cup and the Gold Cup in 1991. The following year he won the German Junior Kart Championship, before moving up into the senior series, finishing runner-up.
After his early success in karting he made the transition to automobile racing in the German Formula Three Championship and the Formula Nippon series.
Ralf first drove in Formula One with Jordan Grand Prix for the 1997 season, before moving to the Williams team in 1999, finishing sixth in the Drivers’ Championship that year. He won his first Grand Prix in 2001, en route to fourth place in the Drivers’ Championship, and subsequently won five more races over the course of two years.
After leaving Williams at the end of 2004, Ralf moved to Toyota Racing in 2005. However, his performance throughout the following two years resulted in Schumacher leaving Formula One, largely because of internal pressure.
Since retiring Ralf has gone onto manage a team within the Mücke Motorsport framework, focusing on nurturing young talent in the ADAC Formula 4 and other junior racing series. Mücke Motorsport, a well-established racing team, has been active in multiple motorsport categories, including DTM, GT racing, and various single-seater championships.
With Mücke Motorsport, Ralf is involved in providing young drivers with the skills and experience necessary to advance to higher levels of motorsport. The team has competed with various manufacturers, including Mercedes-AMG and Audi, across different series. In 2022, Mücke Motorsport continued to compete in the DTM series, fielding Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo cars
In 2001, Ralf opened the Ralf Schumacher Kartcenter in Bispingen, Germany. The karting centre features indoor and outdoor tracks and has become a popular venue for karting enthusiasts of all ages, providing a facility for young people to start racing, as Ralf did when he was young.
As part of his karting centre, Ralf opened his restaurant – Schumachers – which provides a unique dining experience with a view of the racing action on the tracks.
Ralf ventured into the wine business with his brand, Schumacher Selection. He created a line of wines that includes fresh white wines, wines aged in oak barrels, a traditional sparkling wine, and a dessert wine called Picolit.
His passion for wine extends beyond just lending his name to the bottles; he is involved in the entire winemaking process. Each year, he spends time in Slovenia, participating in grape harvesting. His wines are noted for their quality and are available in select restaurants and bars, including some Michelin-starred establishments
