Mark has a PhD in jet engineering. He has worked internationally as a material scientist in America, Ireland and within the UK.
He currently conducts much of his research at the Mechanical Engineering department at UCL, with research areas including self-assembling materials, self-healing materials and psychophysical properties of materials.

Mark has also contributed his scientific expertise on television and the radio, appearing on How It Works and Chef vs Science for BBC4 and the Genius of Invention, Wonderstuff and Dara O’Briain’s Science Club for BBC2.

He regularly holds talks on engineering and materials science at schools and festivals. In 2010, he gave the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures and in 2013, won the Royal Academy of Engineering Rooke Medal. His book, Stuff Matters, was awarded the US National Academies Communication Award, Physics World Book of the Year, the Royal Society Winton Book Prize and a New York Times Best Seller.
