After graduating from Exeter University in English and Drama, Matthew Wright began his journalistic career at the Surrey Mail group of newspapers in Godalming as a junior journalist.
By the age of 26, he was working at The Sun’s ‘Bizarre’ showbiz desk, before becoming a columnist for the Daily Mirror, covering stories such as Phil Collins and Orianne Cevey’s 1999 wedding. Phil Collins would follow his career, and 2002 saw Matthew contribute to a documentary titled Phil Collins: A Life Less Ordinary.
After leaving the papers, he helped develop a new programme for Sky with Richard Littlejohn, gaining his first television role in The Richard Littlejohn Show. This provided Matthew with a fabulous career opportunity, reporting for the show with news packages and entertaining features.
Once the show finished a year later, Fleet Street offered Matthew a three-month stint on the Today newspaper.
Matthew Wright is probably best known for his eponymous TV show The Wright Stuff on Channel 5 (2000-2018). Originally co-hosting with James O’Brien and Kate Silverton, he became the main host after a few years, working with a rotating panel of guests each week.
The guests on the show were often involved in some very controversial talk topics, including sex, crime, and murder.
Matthew left the show on 14th June 2018, but it wasn’t the end of The Wright Stuff; initially, various guest presenters took turns hosting for the remaining summer shows, before it changed to the Jeremy Vine show hosted by, you guessed it, Jeremy Vine.
During his career, Matthew has also featured as GMTV’s TV Critic (ITV) and reported for Rich and Famous (ITV). He has also interviewed Cher, Madonna, Elizabeth Taylor, Elton John and Gwyneth Paltrow, just to name a few.
He has also voiced radio, hosting his own Friday night show, The Weekender on BBC Radio 2. The show features all the latest topical developments in the world of arts and entertainment. He has also presented the music show The Freak Zone on BBC Radio 6, the weekday afternoon slot on national station TalkRadio, and he replaced Andrew Castle at LBC in 2023.
Matthew is also available for general hosting and corporate or live events.
