Jane McDonald was born in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. She grew up in a working-class family and was raised in a close-knit home alongside her brother and sister.
She began singing in local clubs and pubs as a teenager, often performing in working men’s clubs across Northern England.
During this period, she built a modest but steady career as a cabaret singer. She also performed in hotels and holiday parks before making the leap to cruise ship entertainment. Her work on cruise liners, particularly as a headline act, gave her international experience and allowed her to refine her repertoire, ranging from pop and ballads to musical theatre.

Jane’s big break came in 1998, when the BBC selected her as one of the featured performers in its fly-on-the-wall documentary series The Cruise, which followed the lives of crew members aboard the luxury cruise ship Galaxy. Her warm, relatable personality and impressive singing talent quickly made her a favourite with viewers.
The show’s popularity led to a surge in public interest in Jane, and within months she had signed a major recording deal. Her debut album, Jane McDonald, went straight to No. 1 in the UK Albums Chart, marking one of the most successful transitions from reality television to mainstream music at the time.
Beyond music, Jane has become a staple of British television. Her quick wit and genuine personality have made her a natural in front of the camera. She was a regular panellist on the ITV daytime show Loose Women, appearing on and off between 2004 and 2014. However, it was her role as host of Cruising with Jane McDonald that truly cemented her status as a TV favourite.
The Channel 5 travelogue series saw Jane return to her roots aboard cruise ships, exploring destinations around the world while bringing viewers along for the ride. The show earned critical acclaim and won a BAFTA TV Award for Best Feature in 2018.

She has also appeared on The One Show, This Morning, Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, Pointless Celebrities, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Celebrity Gogglebox and Comic Relief.
