Amy Hopper is an award-winning sociologist and entrepreneur who specialises in workplace performance, wellbeing, and the sociology of work. However, her story is much more than this—one of resilience and determination, showing strength to overcome mental and physical adversity.
At 25, one year after Amy set up her first business, she was hit by a dangerous driver. She lost the use of her legs and believed that this marked the end for her. She suffered a permanently damaged spine, soft tissue injuries, PTSD, trauma, hair loss, and five years of chronic pain.
She had a spinal fusion as a last resort, needed a wheelchair and wasn’t allowed to twist, bend or lift. Yet, Amy continued to run her business. Then the world went into lockdown, and all help and treatment stopped. Amy never gave up on her recovery – she prioritised her health, self-care and therapy.
Having sold her marketing business, Amy founded The Overcoming Adversity Group in 2023 and now helps organisations remove psychological barriers to produce higher-performing teams. She runs popular workshops and is a global speaker. Her clients have included the City of London, The New Statesman, the Association of Apprentices, Virgin Media and O2.
Amy Hopper is a testament to resilience and determination, and innovation. Her journey from overcoming life-altering adversity to becoming a renowned business strategist and motivational speaker has inspired many individuals and organisations.
After Amy’s spinal fusion surgery and a year into recovery, the first lockdown hit. Access to her care and treatment came to an abrupt halt. Committed to her recovery, Amy didn’t give up; she prioritised health, self-care, and therapy. She read every book, did every meditation, took every online class, and created a structure to get herself back on track.
Through months of rehabilitation and unwavering focus, she not only regained her mobility but also discovered a renewed sense of purpose. Her recovery journey has become a cornerstone of her message, emphasising the power of perseverance and adaptability in the face of adversity.
She pushed past the mental barriers she placed on herself to grow, perform at her best, and reach her goals. Despite the significant adversity, she transformed into someone happier and healthier, with her wounds turned into wisdom. She now helps individuals, teams and organisations overcome challenges to work at their best, while focusing on emotional wellbeing.

“You gave us a space to have safe conversations that we wouldn’t have had otherwise. Our teams have a lot more willingness to be vulnerable and ask for help. I have seen the practical tools you gave us in action and many positive behavioural changes. It has reminded us all that we’re all human, and we all want the best outcome. This has made a massive difference in building bridges and connections between team members, particularly those who don’t work in the same country. Talk to TOA and you’ll be blown away. Amy Hopper will tailor a programme to meet your needs and get under the skin of your business.” Rachel Clarke: MD, Emerging Communications
“We’ve had lots of different services come into our business before. The reason why Amy is different is because she provides a personal touch, engagement with individuals while catering to the specific needs of the business. We were able to tailor the content and how we worked to our specific circumstances. Amy understands what it takes to get people motivated. We’ve embedded the her structure within our performance program as a tool for every individual to use with
their manager. In the workshop sessions we were really able to drive connections between the different divisions and teams. Amy Hopper has given us a really tangible set of tools that will not only drive performance, but have improved the happiness and wellness of our team.” James McNicholas: Head of Strategy, Virgin-O2
“After the initial call I just new it would be an absolutely fantastic session. One of the things you do extremely well is making the content relatable to everyday challenges, then relate that back to work and the working environment. You do it in such an intelligent way and really give people those takeaways. You make it relevant, which is brilliant. I felt inspired and I could see that everyone on the call was super engaged and really interested. We had so much fantastic feedback afterwards. Whether you book Amy Hopper for a speaker session or longer programme you definitely won’t regret it. She’s engaging, inspiring and everyone that attends will take
something away from it.” Katy Pieris: Strategic Partnerships, The New Statesman
