Gavin Hewitt is a prominent broadcaster and writer. After working as a Correspondent for Canadian television in Toronto he has gone on to hold a series of key positions at the BBC. He has reported on most major world events over the past thirty years.
He was the BBC’s Chief Correspondent from 2015 – 2017. During that period he covered the Trump campaign in the United States. Before that he was the BBC’s Europe Editor for five and a half years.
Gavin was in East Berlin the night the Berlin Wall fell. He was in Moscow for the fall of the Soviet Union and in New York for the attacks of 9/11.
He reported from New Orleans on Hurricane Katrina. In 1997 he wrote and presented the BBC One tribute to Princess Diana. In 2003 he was embedded with US forces for the invasion of Iraq. Three years later he reported on the war in Lebanon in 2006 and then the war in Georgia.
As the BBC’s Europe Editor he covered the crisis in the eurozone and the tensions between the EU and the UK. His blog was voted one of the most influential in Brussels. During that period he wrote the book The Lost Continent on the crisis in Europe.
He is one of the leading commentators on European politics, the European economy and Brexit.
In 2015 he took up a new post as the BBC’s Chief Correspondent where he was at the forefront of all flagship programmes, bringing analysis and insight to a wide range of topics. He has a background in North American politics and has covered most of the US election campaigns in the past twenty years.
