Tim began his career on radio, hosting Radio 4’s arts programme Kaleidoscope (1991-1998), for which he won a Sony Award. His first television appearance was for a documentary on JMW Turner (BBC1).

He later went on to present a collection of art shows for Channel 5 and the controversial Channel 4 debate Is Painting Dead? – where Tracy Emin also made her memorable television debut.
To date, Tim has presented over 100 documentaries on British television and currently presents programmes on Sky Arts.

As a writer, Tim has a collection of books and monographs of artists published. He has also composed articles for The Times, The Guardian, Independent on Sunday, Arena, Art Monthly and Blueprint magazines, as well as founding Tate: The Art magazine.
Tim has also lectured, chaired and participated in panel discussions on art and culture in more than forty countries and is a visiting lecturer and examiner at Winchester School.
