Jamie McDonald

Against all odds, Jamie McDonald has become something of an adventurer.  Jamie spent the first nine years of his life in and out of the hospital with a rare spinal condition known as syringomyelia. Combined with a very weak immune system and epilepsy, his health was very poor.  Around the age of 9 years old, Jamie’s symptoms eased which allowed him to become more active.

As an adult, Jamie McDonald was able to save money aside by working as a tennis coach – he then began a mission to give back to the hospitals that supported him, with his own money.

In 2012, he bought a second-hand bike and decided to cycle 14,000 miles from Bangkok to his hometown Gloucester, passing through dozens of countries.

On his grueling journey, he was shot at, arrested and slept rough. Using YouTube, he documented his travels along the way, cumulating in a highlight video of the whole trip.  Just two days after he finished the journey back from Bangkok; he made the decision to attempt the world static cycling record.

He pedaled for a world record-breaking 268 hours on an exercise bike set up within a marquee in Gloucester.  Across both cycling challenges, Jamie raised tens of thousands of pounds for a charity that benefits the children’s ward of Gloucester Royal Hospital.
