Diarmuid Gavin also won documentary series of the year for Blood of the Irish, which followed Diarmuid as he unraveled Irish heritage going back 60,000 years and presented the 2 hour BBC documentary Rich, Famous and Jobless and participated in 71 Degrees North– an endurance show for 2 weeks set in the icy glaciers of Scandinavia.
He has also appeared on Strictly Come Dancing, The Weakest Link, Mastermind, Masterchef, Splash! Celebrity Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, Celebrity Come Dine With Me and traced his family tree on Who Do You Think You Are?
Diarmuid Gavin Gardening Charity Campaigner
A charity advocate, Diarmuid is an ambassador of the Princes Foundation, set up by Prince Charles. He was also a member of the jury for the UK’s leading architectural awards, the Stirling Prize.
In 2011, Diarmuid returned to the Chelsea Flower Show with his ambitious ‘Irish Sky Garden;’ an exhibit inspired by the Wonkavator. In 2012, he unveiled his ‘Magical Tower Garden;’ a scaffolding structure containing gardens on 7 levels, one on top of the other and in 2016 he once again returned to Chelsea with the ‘Harrods British Eccentric Garden;’ inspired by the work of the beloved British illustrator Heath Robinson.
Diarmuid has written an array of gardening books including two co-authored with Sir Terence Conran. His most recent feature, The Extra Room: Make Your Outdoor Space Work For You, was published in 2016. His autobiography, How the Boy Next Door Turned Out was published in 2011.
In 2007, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Art from Nottingham Trent University in recognition of his contribution to garden design.
Diarmuid currently runs his garden design studio, with clients in Europe, South Africa and the Middle East. He is available for quick gardening demos and expert talks.
