Darren Campbell MBE is an Olympic gold medal-winning athlete, author and TV pundit. He was part of the Great Britain 4x100m gold-medal-winning relay team at the Olympics in Athens in 2004.
Forming part of one of Britain’s best ever relay teams, Darren Campbell and his fellow athletes first won in the European Cup in 1999 and 2000 and at the 2002 Commonwealth Games before going on to win the memorable Olympic gold in Athens.
Darren started his winning athletics career in Greece in 1991, where he won his first gold and silver medals at the European Junior Championships. His first senior gold came in 1998, winning both 100m sprint and the 4 x 100m relay.
Throughout his career, Darren won six golds, three silver and three bronze medals. In 2005 he was awarded an MBE for his contribution to athletics. Darren announced his retirement from athletics in August 2006.
Darren Campbell MBE is an inspirational speaker, who shares insights into his career as an athlete, a footballer and coach, as well as motivating audiences on how to fight back after difficulties, having a resilience mindset and how to have a winning attitude.
Darren was selected for the World Championships in 1993 as part of the relay squad but was then hit by injuries and he made the move to football, his other sporting passion.
He had trials for Millwall featuring in the reserves, played seven games for Plymouth Argyle, scoring nine goals for the reserve team. He was about to receive a contract from then manager Neil Warnock, but he had already almost signed a semi-pro contract with Weymouth.
After a year at Weymouth, Darren returned to athletics, a decision that would see him go on to win medals at the Olympics, European Championships, World Championships and the Commonwealth Games.
Darren retired from athletics in 2006 and a year later he was announced as an ambassador for Sky Sports Living for Sport, an initiative that uses sport as a tool to re-engage young people who may be at risk of opting out of school life. He is currently a member of the Youth Sport Trust and other initiatives that motivate young kids to believe in themselves and get involved in athletics.
Darren utilised his sprint expertise, giving training sessions to Manchester United, Chelsea, Everton and Cardiff City, working on players’ pace and acceleration. He has also been engaged by several professional rugby clubs such as Sale Sharks and Saracens to help develop the power and speed of their players.
