Sir Nick Clegg

Sir Nick Clegg served as Deputy Prime Minister in Britain’s first post-war coalition government from 2010 to 2015. He was leader of the Liberal Democrats from 2007 to 2015, and was a Member of Parliament for Sheffield Hallam for 12 years before the 2017 general election in which he lost his seat and subsequently resigned.

In 2018 he was appointed Facebook Head of Global Affairs and Communications, and presently resides in California with his wife and children.

His experience both as an MP and MEP sees him well equipped to deal with an industry that is increasingly under the regulators’ microscope, especially in Europe.

In 2018, he received a Knighthood in honour of his political and public service.

More About Sir Nick Clegg

Whilst best known for working in British politics, Sir Nick Clegg had an interesting career prior to this. Between 1992 and 1993 he worked with GJW Government Relations, working on behalf of Libya. The following year, he joined the European Commission, working on aid programmes, airline rights, and European transport. He went on to work as a policy advisor and speechwriter for the Trade Commissioner Leon Brittan, before being named lead Liberal Democrat candidate for the European Parliament in 1998.

As a MEP, he took particular interest in trade and industry affairs, trade negotiations, politician transparency and accountability, and telecom laws. After fulfilling his duties here, he moved into British politics in the Liberal Democrat party.

His best day came in 2010 when he was named Deputy Prime Minister. In this role, Nick occupied the second-highest office in the country at a time when the UK was recovering from a deep recession following the banking crisis of 2008, and hugely controversial decisions were needed to restore stability to the public finances. During that time, he oversaw referenda on electoral reform and Scottish independence, made decisions on anti-terrorism measures, worked on the conflict in Libya, and extensive reforms to the education, health and pension systems.

He made himself more available to the public that any politician had been before, and provided a radio call-in show on LBC called “Call Cleg”, which would go on to be nominated for two Radio Academy Awards in 2014. Since then, he has hosted the Anger Management With Nick Clegg podcast, which was featured in The Guardian under ‘Podcast of the Week’.

Even though he left politics in 2017, he has remained an advocate for civil liberties, grounded politics, social mobility, and world affairs.

He has published two books, the first being Politics: Between the Extremes (2016), which was followed by How To Stop Brexit (And Make Britain Great Again (2017). Both books were a Sunday Times bestseller.

After resigning in 2017, Nick was named the Vice-President of Global Affairs and Communications at Facebook, where he predominately looked into GDPR, and data protection coming from the Cambridge Analytica data scandal. In 2020, he co-created the Facebook Oversight Board, helped deplatform former President Donald Trump in 2021, and was then promoted to President of Global Affairs in 2022.

His insight into the most senior levels of UK government, combined with an integral understanding and experience of European politics, contacts at the highest levels of government across the EU, and fluency in five European languages, mean that his views and analysis on the current Government continue to be in high demand.
