Nicky grew up as one of seven children in an Old Kent Road council house with two bedrooms and only an outside toilet. His father was a turbine operator at Bankside Power Station in South-East London, and his Mother – a Greek immigrant – was a seamstress.
His interest in hairdressing began as a teenager. He started off giving friends and classmates trims before he was taken on as an apprentice at House of Leonard, where John Frieda worked.
By 17, he had his first Vogue shoot in 1976, and soon after, he founded his first salon with John Frieda on Marylebone Road.
His early work in top London salons gave him a foundation in classic hairstyling, which he later blended with an innovative flair that set him apart.
In 1991, he founded the Nicky Clarke salon in London’s prestigious Mayfair with his then-girlfriend Lesley, turning a £20,000 loan into a successful enterprise. The salon quickly became a beacon of style and sophistication. Known for his dedication to quality and precision, Nicky’s salon attracted an elite clientele and secured his status as the “Hairdresser to the Stars.”
Nicky’s hands were insured for £1m, and a single cut from those hands was priced at £650.
Nicky’s influence has been recognised through numerous industry awards. He has won the London Hairdresser of the Year in 1992, 1994 and 1995, British Hairdresser of the Year in 1994, British Fellowship of the Year 1994, and Image of the Year 1994.and has been featured in prestigious fashion and beauty magazines, including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Tatler.
His career achievements include styling members of the British Royal Family, leading Hollywood stars, and some of the world’s most influential cultural figures.
