As an after dinner speaker his wealth of experience is unparalleled and he can entertain and inform about television’s incredible history. With over thirty years experience in business and financial journalism he can talk with authority, and of course humour, about crisis and confidence, fear and greed, boom and bust.
He joined Sky Television in that role in 1989. In 1992, he left to present GMTV’s early morning news and business hour.
He then returned to Sky as Business and Economics Editor in 1995, and launched Sky Business Report, the news channel’s then daily evening money programme. Since then, he has anchored nearly all of Sky’s coverage of major business events, from Budget specials to reporting through both boom and bust. Since leaving Sky in 2009, Michael has broadcast for ITV, the BBC, Fox, Reuters, Al-Jazeera, LBC, and TRT World.
He has also written for national newspapers and his reports have been taken and watched worldwide. In 2012, he co-wrote Fixing Britain: The Business of Reshaping Our Nation with Lord Digby Jones, providing “no-nonsense solutions from the straight-talking face of British business”.
As well as his record breaking run as a broadcast Business Editor, Michael has a long pedigree in news, business and current affairs. Before Sky, he was a reporter and presenter on Thames TV’s flagship This Week and in 1987; he helped found Thames’ award-winning The City Programme, where he worked as a reporter and main presenter. In the 1990s, he also presented London News Radio’s Breakfast Show and helped launch Reuters Financial Television. In 2006 he was named Broadcast Business Journalist of the Year.
He was made a Freeman of the City of London in 2005. He has lectured in Europe and internationally from the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the introduction of the single currency, through to the current economic crisis, the future shape of the financial services and banking industry.
