As one of Channel 4’s most prolific presenters, Matt Frei has covered everything from the war in Ukraine, to tensions in Crimea, from the crash site of the Malaysia flight MH17, and reported from Independence Square on Kiev’s bloodiest day. He has also interviewed high-profile political figures including Aung San Suu Kyi, Bill Clinton, George W Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump. The latter two stemmed from documentaries Matt was involved with, firstly The American Road Trip: Obama’s Story, where Matt travelled across the mid-west to document their reactions to this historical political figure. After this, he worked on The Mad World of Donald Trump (2016), looking at the reality TV star turned president and those who surrounded him.
These aren’t the only documentaries on high-profile figures that Matt has been involved in. He has presented, reported or narrated shows such as Trump vs. Clinton (2016), Ivanka Trump: America’s Real First Lady? (2017), Obama: The President Who Inspired the World (2018), His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh (2021), and Zelensky: The Man Who Took on Putin (2022).
Prior to working as Channel 4’s Europe Editor, he worked as their Washington Correspondent, reporting on US business, culture, politics, and foreign policy. He was also the Washington Correspondent for BBC World News America, and presented a weekly radio show called Americana. Whilst working for the BBC, he reported from across the globe, from Bonn and Rome to Bosnia and Hong Kong, to Kosovo, North Africa, and Singapore.
In 2017, Matt won a Bayeux War Correspondents award for his Syria coverage. These were not the first accolades Matt received, having won the 1999 RTS Foreign Story of the Year, and the RTS Journalist of the Year in 2015 and 2017. He also won the Bayeux Calvados Award in 2000 for his war reporting, a BAFTA for Best News Coverage in 2016 for his coverage of the Paris attacks, a Peabody Award in 2010, and the DuPont Award in 2011 for his coverage of the Haiti earthquake.
As well as being a successful reporter and presenter, he has authored two non-fiction books. The first, Italy: The Unfinished Revolution came out in 1996, and was followed up in 2008 by Only In America.
