Mary Nightingale studied English at London University but started her career as a Eurobond dealer in the City, followed by a period at Airmiles. It wasn’t until 1990 that she had her first taste of television, working for TV Tokyo: World Business Satellite, where she spent the next five years reporting on financial news from across Europe. It was here that she covered topics, including the release of Nelson Mandela and the toppling of Margaret Thatcher.

She first broadcasted to a UK audience in 1993, presenting the late-night bulletin on London Tonight and then joining Alastair Stewart as co-presenter in 1996. Mary took a break from news reading in 1999, instead presenting the popular ITV travel show Wish You Were Here (1999-2001). During this time, she crossed the Atlantic on the QE2 and the Concorde, herded cattle by horseback in Arizona, and learnt to scuba dive. But the buzz of the newsroom called her home, and she joined ITV in 2000 for their relaunch of the evening news. Whilst there, the programme won three RTS Awards.

Mary is now the main anchor for the programme and has been nominated for several awards, including a BAFTA for her coverage of the Queen Mother’s death.

As a reporter, Mary has hosted live royal events, including at Westminster Abbey during the 2011 Royal Wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales – then Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – William and Catherine; she also presented a one-hour special for ITV documenting their visit to Canada, Kate in Canada. She also covered the wedding of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle in 2018, Prince Philip’s funeral in 2021, and the lying in state and funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

Mary has dipped her toe in other presenting jobs, including Britain’s Best Dish (2011), Holidays Undercover (2003; 2006), Maddie: A Global Obsession (2014), and The Year of Weird Weather (2006), and covered the 1999 eclipse, 1995 Rugby World Cup, and Ski Sunday. She has also interviewed some of the most inspiring individuals from around the world, including Stephen Fry and Gordon Ramsey.
