After studying history at the University of Southampton, John Inverdale completed a postgraduate journalism qualification at the Centre for Journalism Studies in Cardiff. He began his professional career in 1980 as a reporter for the Lincolnshire Echo, gaining traditional newsroom experience in regional print media.

In 1982, he joined BBC Radio Lincolnshire, marking his first step into broadcast journalism.
