Joe was born into a creative family and initially he pursued a career in the arts, dabbling in acting and set design before discovering his passion for horticulture in his twenties. He trained as a garden designer and quickly made a name for himself with his contemporary, sustainable design aesthetic.
Joe Swift | Early TV Career
Joe’s break into television came in the late 1990s, when his engaging personality, natural communication skills, and deep horticultural knowledge caught the attention of BBC producers. His first major TV role was as a presenter on BBC Two’s Gardeners’ World in 1998, where his relatable style and practical advice quickly won over audiences.
Joe stood out for his ability to make garden design feel accessible rather than intimidating, offering creative ideas that viewers could replicate at home. His television debut coincided with a growing public interest in home improvement and outdoor living, placing him at the forefront of a new generation of garden presenters. From there, his TV career flourished, and he became a regular fixture on the BBC’s flagship gardening and flower show coverage.

As a trained garden designer, Joe has created numerous private and public gardens, both in the UK and internationally. He is a co-founder and Design Director of Modular Garden, a company specialising in contemporary, eco-friendly garden design. His work combines structure, beauty and functionality, often incorporating sustainable materials and techniques that reflect his commitment to environmentally conscious gardening.
Joe has also designed several show gardens for RHS events, including Chelsea Flower Show, where his work has been widely praised for its innovation and elegance.

Joe is an RHS Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medal winner, with one of his standout show gardens commissioned by Homebase and Teenage Cancer Trust, acclaimed for its contemporary design and planting.
In 2012, he was named a runner‑up in the Architectural Review’s Global Architecture Graduate Awards, recognising work with the Redundant Architects Recreation Association (RARA).

More recently, Joe received the 2021 Society of Garden Designers (SGD) Award in the Healing, Learning or Community Landscapes & Gardens category for his design of Horatio’s Garden at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. The SGD judges described the garden as “an absolutely phenomenal space demonstrating exceptional quality of design and execution”.
