Jo Malone CBE is a celebrated British perfumer and entrepreneur whose innovative approach to fragrance has left an enduring mark on the beauty and candle industry.
Jo worked as a florist in her early career and offered facials from her home. During this period, she began crafting scented products by hand in her kitchen. Her unique creations quickly gained popularity, leading to the establishment of her first brand, Jo Malone London, in 1990.
The brand became renowned for its distinctive fragrances and elegant packaging, epitomised by the iconic cream boxes with black edging. The brand’s reputation soared, culminating in the opening of its first store on Walton Street in London in 1994, followed by a flagship store on Sloane Street in 1999. That same year, Jo sold the company to Estée Lauder Companies, continuing to serve as its creative director until her departure in 2006.

Jo grew up in a council house in Bexleyheath, South East London, in a family that faced financial difficulties. She battled dyslexia and left school with zero qualifications, with teachers telling her she would not make anything of her life and that she was ‘lazy and stupid’.
Her father was an artist and her mother a beautician, and Jo often credits her creative instincts to that blend of influences. She left school at just 13 to care for her mother, who was unwell, taking on adult responsibilities early and developing the resilience that would later define her entrepreneurial journey.
Jo’s early career involved working as a florist and then as a facial therapist, working from a skin care clinic she had set up in her London home. Working by hand in her kitchen, she discovered her instinctive talent for creating scented products.
Jo Malone London experienced rapid growth throughout the 1990s, transforming from a small kitchen-based enterprise into a globally recognised luxury fragrance brand. The opening of its first boutique on Walton Street in London in 1994 marked a turning point, as word-of-mouth buzz and a loyal client base propelled demand.
Known for its understated yet sophisticated packaging and distinctive layering scents, the brand became synonymous with modern British elegance. Its rise caught the attention of Estée Lauder Companies, which acquired the business in 1999. This enabled international expansion while retaining Jo Malone’s creative direction.
By the early 2000s, the popular scented products were stocked in high-end department stores worldwide and had firmly established itself as a powerhouse in the global fragrance market. Jo is no longer associated with the brand or its products.

Five years after leaving Jo Malone London, Jo launched her new brand, Jo Loves, to global anticipation. Based in Belgravia, the brand is known for its bold, inventive scents and pioneering concepts, such as the world’s first Fragrance Tapas experience. Jo Loves showcases her continued passion for storytelling through fragrance, blending innovation with the same elegance and quality that defined her earlier success.
