Jess Learmonth MBE is an Olympic Gold medal triathlete who went from supermarket worker to multiple medal winner.
Bursting onto the triathlon scene in 2016, Jess went on to win 18 medals in European, Commonwealth and World Triathlon Series competitions.
Jess Learmonth MBE won the European Triathlon Championship in 2017 and took silver in 2018. In the Commonwealth Games in 2018 she she won two silver medals, with a further silver in the 2019 World Triathlon Series.
Her hard work and resilience paid off when in 2020, Jessica won the gold medal in the triathlon mixed relay at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo. There was another silver for Jessica in the 2021 Super League Triathlon Championship Series.
Jess didn’t rise to success competing in the junior ranks and progressing to elite racing, and didn’t take up triathlon racing until she was in her mid-20s.
She was the winner of national swimming titles in her teens but stepped away from the sport at 17. Her strong swimming would play a significant part in her future career as a triathlete, often first out of the water when competing.
Jessica Learmonth MBE was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 2022 New Year Honours for services to triathlon.
When competing in high-level swimming competitions as a teenager, Jess had been training nine or 10 times a week before and after school. She didn’t have a social life and she had stopped enjoying it, finding it hard and boring.
Having lost the love of the sport, feeling tired and bored she decided to step away at age 17. She then went from being extremely fit to doing nothing and never exercising but having time to do things and go out with friends.
In 2010, when Jess was 22, she went travelling with her boyfriend to Australia, part of a year long break from their jobs in England.
On return from Australia in 2010, Jessica was feeling unfit fit and that she had put on weight and exercise and fitness once again became a feature of her life.
After injuring knee ligaments when taking part in a fitness boot camp, she was advised that cycling could help her rehabilitation. Then Jessica Learmonth took part in a low-key fund-raising triathlon challenge in 2012 with work colleagues, a challenge that would be the start of her career in the sport on the world stage.
After just a couple of year’s triathlon racing, Jessica burst onto the Elite scene in 2016 with her first European Cup win. The following year saw her win the ETU European title and secure two ITU World Triathlon Series podium finishes.
In 2018, Jessica represented Team England for the first time at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, winning a silver medal in both the individual and mixed relay event at her first major multi-sport games.
Jess grew to be one of the most consistent competitors in World Series Triathlon becoming a podium regular from 2019 onwards.
In 2012, Jess Learmonth MBE went to the Olympics in London as a spectator, watching the triathlon. Just eight years later she was representing Great Britain in the very same sport and winning Gold. Jess now has her sights on the Olympics in Paris 2024.
