Gary O’Neil made his playing career in 2000 when he was just 16 years old, playing for Portsmouth in the First Division. Whilst at Portsmouth, he would be loaned to Walsall and Cardiff City. He moved to Middlesbrough in 2007 until 2011, when he moved to West Ham United, making his debut in the League Cup. Sadly, injury in April 2011 and subsequent operation saw him sitting out for several months.

Once healed, Gary signed for Queens Park Rangers, winning the 2014 Football League Championship play-off final. Since then, he has played for Norwich City, Bristol City, and Bolton Wanderers, where he would be named 2018=19 Player of the Year.

As well as his proficient club-level career, Gary earned caps for England at every youth level, and even captained the side at the 2003 FIFA Under-20 World Youth Championship.

Since leaving his playing career behind, Gary has become a coach, and has held managerial positions for Liverpool’s Under-23 squad, Bournemouth – where he would appear as caretaker and permanent head coach – and, since August 2023, Wolverhampton Wanderers.
