TV AND FILM
Denise Van Outen’s big break came in 1996 when she began presenting The Big Breakfast alongside favourites Johnny Vaughan, Richard Bacon, and Vanessa Feltz. This thrust her into the spotlight, and she soon became one of the most in-demand presenters on British television.
She has since presented dozens of programmes, including The Friday Night Project (2005-06) and Loose Women (2017), as well as numerous musical-based shows, such as You’re The One That I Want (2007), Hairspray: The School Musical (2008), Who Dares, Sings! (2008), and Any Dream Will Do (2007) – she would go on to marry the winner of that show, Lee Mead.
She has appeared as a contestant in popular shows Dancing on Ice (2021), Cooking With the Stars (2021), The Masked Singer (2020), and Strictly Come Dancing (2012), as well as acting in The Bill (1998), Eastenders (2015), Neighbours (2019-20), and Fireman Sam: Norman Price and the Mystery in the Sky (2020).
It’s fair to say that Denise’s love lies with the theatre. As a child, she attended the Sylvia Young Theatre School and appeared in Les Misérables when she was just 11-12 years old. She has since appeared in A Midsummer Night’s Dream with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Chicago (2001-02; 2018), Legally Blond (2010-11), Rent (2007), Tell Me On a Sunday (2003), and numerous pantomimes.
In 2011, Denise published her first book, Bumpalicious, which explored her experiences of pregnancy. This was followed up in 2012 by Adventures of Parenthood, where she wrote about first-time parenting. In 2022, Denise released her autobiography, A Bit of Me: From Basildon to Broadway, and back. The book was an instant success and would end up on the Sunday Times bestsellers list.
Denise partnered with M&S to become their official food taster. Whilst pregnant with her daughter, she designed and launched her own maternity clothing range with the brand Very. She has also collaborated with Matalan, Hello Fresh, Hartleys, Ninja Food, and Dr PawPaw.
Denise has also worked with a number of charities, using her position to draw focus onto important causes. She has completed several challenges to raise money, including climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, cycling 197 miles across India, and completing a Himalayan trek in search of the Dali Lama.
