Anneka Rice started her broadcasting career on a two-year BBC training course on production. Aged 19, she left the BBC and moved to Hong Kong, spending the next three years working for a PR agency by day, presenting the news on TVB Pearl by evening and dubbing kung fu movies by night. Upon her return to the UK, she began working for The World Service on The World Today and Outlook, before moving to Thames TV.
She shot to fame in 1982 with Channel 4’s Treasure Hunt (1982-2003). This firmly established her as Britain’s ”Action Woman” as she was asked to jump out of a plane, land helicopters on submarines, descend into water potholes in treacherous conditions and climb mountains. The programme was an instant hit, with ratings of over eight million.
Anneka has since presented numerous television shows including Sporting Chance (1984-1986), The Holiday Programme (1969-2007), TVam (1983-1992), Wish You Were Here (1974-2003) and Combat (1989-1990). In 2006, she was part of the hosting team for the ITV show Extinct alongside Sir Trevor McDonald and Zoe Ball. It featured eight celebrities highlighting the plight of some of the world’s most endangered species and showcased Anneka’s passion for saving endangered animals.
Anneka has been a guest on shows such as Harry Hill’s Alien Fun Capsule (2017-2019), Richard Osman’s House of Games (2017-), This Morning (1988-), Antiques Road Trip (2010-), Celebrity Hunted (2017-), Would I Lie To You (2007-), Celebrity Portrait Artist of the Year (2013-), Celebrity Bake Off (2010-) and Strictly Come Dancing (2004-).
In 2011, Anneka was the host of the TV documentary Home Is Where The Heart Is. It involved Anneka moving a young homeless girl into her house for two weeks to help her off the streets. It was so successful, that she has been mentoring her ever since along with a team or specialists, and Anneka hopes to roll the idea out across the country.
Anneka is a familiar voice on the radio, working predominately for Radio 4 on The Waiting Game, In The Life Drawing Class, Loose Ends, Where’s the F in News, A Good Read, My Teenage Diary and the award-winning podcast, Fortunately. She has also made cameos of herself in several episodes of The Archers.
She has also hosted for Radio 2 including the Saturday breakfast show which she presented for ten years, Pick of the Week, Friday Night is Music Night, The Arts Show, Sunday Love Songs, Anneka on Sunday, Anneka’s 80s and 90s Treasures and Junior Choice. She was the go-to voice to host a two-hour radio documentary exploring the artwork and music of Ronnie Wood in Paint it Black with Ronnie Wood (2017).
Anneka was involved with the 1999 Cricket World Cup, promoting the one-day event as a new way for people, especially women, to get into cricket. She also hosted the Children’s Royal Variety Performance in 1988, and 1997’s Children in Need. In 2012, she co-hosted the programme Rolf Paints…Diamond Jubilee alongside Rolf Harris to celebrate sixty years of Queen Elizabeth II on the throne.
Anneka can also be heard on a number of podcasts, including Older and Wiser alongside Jenny Éclair, My Time Capsule, My Mate Bought a Toaster and RHLSTP With Richard Herring. She was part of the judging panel at the 2010 and 2019 Costa Book Awards for the best First Novel and Children’s Book respectively.
Anneka was seen in 2017 presenting her garden at the Chelsea Garden Show, designed alongside gardener Sarah Raven and designer Tricia Guild as part of a BBC parade of gardens.
Anneka is passionate about charity work and has helped at fundraising events and become a patron/ambassador to a number of organisations including the Children’s Hospice Association, Comic/Sport Relief, Children in Need, FISH, Horatio’s Garden, Riding for the Disabled, Marie Curie and Operation Encompass.
