Dennis Taylor

Dennis Taylor is a former snooker player, BBC Sports pundit and after dinner speaker. His illustrious career spanned nearly three decades, with World Championship, Grand Prix and Masters wins.

After retiring, the much-loved sportsman joined the BBC snooker team, where he became known for his witty and light-hearted commentary on big snooker events.

One of Dennis Taylor’s most notable and famous matches was in the 1985 World Snooker Championship final against Steve Davis. After losing the first eight frames, Dennis recovered and went on to win 18-17 with the most dramatic of ends – the match concluding with the final black ball.

The match, which has become known as the ‘blackball final’, was watched by 18.5 million viewers, setting a record for viewer numbers for a post-midnight broadcast and for any broadcast on BBC2.

After an impressive 28 year career, Taylor retired from snooker in 2000. He has since been a regular on BBC’s snooker broadcasts, as well as appearing on a number of other TV programmes.
