Tom Rowland

Tom Rowland is an Emmy-nominated wildlife cinematographer and photographer who has spent the last decade filming some of the world’s most extraordinary wildlife stories across more than 25 countries. His work includes major productions such as the BBC’s Planet Earth III, Netflix’s Emmy Award-winning Secret Life of Orangutans, and Disney’s Underdogs.

He started his career as the in-house wildlife cameraman for the RSPB before going on to work with Silverback Films on series including BBC’s A Perfect Planet and BBC’s The Mating Game. His filming has taken him to the planet’s most remote and challenging locations including tropical jungles, African savannahs and to the Arctic.

Beyond the impressive credits, Tom is a brilliant storyteller with so many incredible behind-the-scenes tales from the wildlife filmmaking world; from expedition life and animal behaviour to the patience, resilience and unpredictability that comes with filming natural history at the highest level. He’s also bilingual in French and English and is a very experienced and engaging speaker.

Wildlife filming has taken him to many of the world’s most remote and challenging locations, from humid tropical jungle swamps in South East Asia to the dry savannahs of Eastern and Southern Africa as well as the freezing Arctic.

Wildlife filming started for Tom whilst working full time at the RSPB’s Film Unit as their in-house wildlife cameraman. There he spent a few years traveling the UK, often solo, filming predominantly birds. Soon after he was hired by the world famous Silverback Films In Bristol as their in-house cameraman filming across their BBC 1 series A Perfect Planet and The Mating Game.

Tom has earned himself two Outstanding Cinematography Emmy nominations from his filming style of focusing in on delicate animal behaviour and the detail and minutiae of animal personalities. He prides himself on his work ethic and the extra level of patience and dedication required to reveal the subtleties of an animal’s character that can bring a species and a sequence to life.

When he is not filming wildlife then Tom is a passionate street and landscape photographer where he roams the streets of London, Bristol and beyond to capture life that day. As a photographer he takes great inspiration from the impressionist painters and often injects that style into his photography to create pictures that look like paintings.
