Tom Hird, otherwise known as The Blowfish, is the world’s only heavy metal marine biologist.
Tom has been a regular face on British TV over the last decade, bringing his knowledge and unique style of presenting to audiences of all ages.
Not only is he a marine biologist and presenter, he is also an Ambassador for the Marine Conservation Society, an Ambassador for The Shark Trust UK, and an Ambassador for the South African Shark Conservancy. He is a PADI Dive Master and BSAC Dive Leader, and the author of Blowfish’s Oceanopedia (2017).
The son of a veterinary surgeon, Tom Hird learnt the value of animals from a young age, and now he devotes his time to teaching the wonder of wildlife, and the importance of conservation, particularly ocean conservation, to the next generation.
With over 20 years of experience, Tom knows all too well the perilous state of our oceans. He has experience with a range of dangerous animals, both in the wild and in controlled settings, and it is this experience that allows him to free drive with sharks safely.
Tom’s most recent positions involves being a marine biologist for Off the Fence, an Environmental Consultant for Primordial Radio, and an Ecological Consultant for Quantock Energy Ltd.

Tom Hird is a popular face on our television screens, and has featured on a number of well-loved programmes, including:

– This Morning (2014): provided segments about native marine animals, and the dangers of jellyfish swarms in the UK.

– Blue Peter (2010-13): presenting on topics including the Barrel Eye Spook Fish, and Amazon animals.
He is also the presenter of ITV’s Fishing Impossible (2015-17), and the co-presenter for CITV’s The Cool Stuff Collective (2011). Over the years, he has also presented for Twister Films, Tigress Productions, and Granada Factual North. He has also fronted several films for Discovery in the US, mainly Great White Battlegrounds, Great White Girl Gangs, Cocaine Shark, 6000 LB Shark, and a 50th Anniversary JAWS special titled Surviving Jaws.
But he is probably best known for being the host of Ocean Wonders on EarthxTV. Launched in 2023, it brings the incredible world of water to viewers in a style only the Blowfish can.
In 2018, Tom became an Ocean Ambassador for the Marine Conservation Society. He helps promote, support, and champion the great conservation work being undertaken to protect our oceans. In 2019, Tom became an Ambassador for the South African Shark Conservancy, helping to highlight and support the shark education programs being undertaken by the team.
