Tom Dean MBE is a British swimmer, fast becoming one of our greatest, comparable to fellow Great British Speaker, Adam Peaty.
Not content with swimming in just the one discipline, Adam has competed in the 200 and 400 metre individual freestyles as well as the 4×200 freestyle relay, the mixed 4×100 and 4×200 metre relays, as well as the men’s 4×100 and 4×200 metre freestyle, winning medals in all disciplines.
Still in his early 20’s, Tom Dean is already a double Olympic champion, with many more medals besides. Definitely one to watch for Paris 2024 and beyond.
Tom took part in the 2024 series of Strictly Come Dancing.
Tom Dean first took up swimming when he was eight years old, joining the Maidenhead Marlins swimming club. He would continue training in swimming whilst studying mechanical engineering at the University of Bath.
He first entered the European Junior Championships in 2017, where he won the gold in the 200m Individual Medley, and the silver in the 400m Individual Medley. At the championships the following year he would go on to retain his gold medal, breaking a Junior record in the process. He also won two bronze medals, in the 400m individual and the 4x200m freestyle relay.

He was picked for his first senior competition in 2018 at the European Championships, where he won gold as part of the 4x200m freestyle team.
Cemented as an up-and-coming star, Tom Dean won gold as part of the mixed 4x100m and mixed 4x200m freestyle, silver in the men’s 4x100m freestyle and 4x200m freestyle at the 2021 European Championships, as well as an individual bronze in the 200m freestyle.
Despite catching COVID-19 twice in the lead up to the Tokyo games, meaning he missed out on nearly two months of preparation, his raw talent prevailed. In the 2020 Summer Olympics (held in 2021), he won the gold in the 200m freestyle and gold in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay, becoming the first male British swimmer to win two Olympic gold medals at the same games in 113 years. At the 2022 World Aquatics Championships, he won the bronze medal in the 200m freestyle – the first Great British medal at the game – as well as a bronze in the men’s 4x100m medley and bronze in the 4x200m freestyle relay.
In the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Tom won a gold medal in the 4x100m medley, and six silver medals, in the 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 200m medley, 4x100m freestyle, 4x200m freestyle and 4x100m mixed freestyle.
Tom competed at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games; he placed 5th in the Men’s 200m Individual Medley, and 5th in the Men’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay, but he won a Gold Medal in the Men’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay!
Thanks to his achievements and services to swimming, he was named an MBE in the 2022 New Year’s Honours List.
Still early on in his senior swimming career, Tom is still finding his feet in the corporate world, attending events alongside experienced speakers, including the Best Estate Agent Guide Awards in 2021 with fellow Olympian Dame Sarah Storey.
