Jen – otherwise known as The Travel Mum – founded the brand during the Covid pandemic when she was working as an NHS doctor.
During this time, she was sharing videos of the budget trips she and her family had taken, which started to get noticed. As a result of this, she realised there was a huge demand for more information on DIY travel.
The Travel Mum now has a thriving community of over 700,000 followers and partnerships with industry leaders like Jet2holidays and TUI, specialising in making exceptional travel experiences accessible to everyone.
Jen grew up on a council estate in South Yorkshire. She has wonderful childhood memories of caravan holidays and the occasional budget trip abroad, and it was these experiences that helped her to understand that lots of money isn’t necessary to make memories.
Growing up, she aspired to be a doctor, but was often told to have more realistic goals, as no one in her family had been to university. She worked multiple jobs while studying for her A Levels; her determination paid off and she gained a place at Sheffield Medical School.
In the time between her schooling and going off to medical school, Jen used her savings to go on a three-month solo trip to Southeast Asia, and it was this holiday (on a very limited budget) that caused her passion for travel to blossom.

After graduating from medical school, she spend a decade as an NHS doctor, predominately in general surgery. During this time, she combined her love of travel with medicine by working as an expedition medic in Columbia, Indonesia, and Mexico. She even took part in the Channel 4 reality show Eden (2016), which saw her living in the wilderness of Scotland using her skills to help set up a community. This experience was life changing, and she realised how much she valued experiences and people over money, and so she cut down her surgical work and started travelling more.
In 2016, she had a baby, but was determined to continue travelling. Her son Leo had his first passport at two weeks old. She started posting videos of their travels to social media, quickly gaining popularity. Her followers wanted to know how she found such cheap travel and how she travelled with a baby – and so The Travel Mum was born.
As well as her work in the tourism industry, Jen is also an advocate for the difficulties women face, including infertility and miscarriage, openly sharing her own ongoing journey to baby number two. She feels women are often left to get through these difficult situations in silence, and she wants to change this.
The Travel Mum now serves as a reliable guide for a community of travel enthusiasts. Their audience consists of busy mums who want to travel more, have no idea where to start, and don’t have the time to research. The Travel Mum give people the confidence to book holidays when they were otherwise anxious to do so.
When it comes to budget travel advice, Jen is a go-to figure on social media.
Her frequent viral posts to her 712,000+ followers have gained the attention of the press, and she has featured in The Daily Mail, The Mirror, The New York Times, and The Sun.
The cost of living crisis and increasingly tight budgets mean more people than ever are looking for advice on how to cut costs and get the most out of their money. Jen is passionate about helping those people to travel and have memorable experiences, regardless of their income.
