Steph McGovern is an award-winning journalist and broadcaster, best known for presenting economic programmes and her own lunchtime programme, Steph’s Packed Lunch (2020-23).
Working in financial journalism for over 15 years, with eight years at BBC Breakfast, Steph has reported from all over the UK, covering economic news, as well as broadcasting live from over 500 businesses.
She co-hosts The Rest is Money with fellow Great British Speaker Robert Peston, exploring the economic issues that affect our everyday lies, decode business jargon, and revisit some of the biggest financial events of recent history.
She is a frequent host on Have I Got News For You (2017-present), and a regular guest on TV and radio shows, including Sunday Brunch (2020), Robson Green’s Weekend Escapes (2023), and The Apprentice: You’re Fired (2025).
Steph is openly gay and has used her platform, which includes over 500,000 social media followers, to increase diversity and acceptance in high-profile industries such as hers.
Steph McGovern’s career did not start in journalism, or economic, but engineering. When she was just 19 she was awarded the Young Engineers Club ‘Young Engineer For Britain’ title, before studying for an engineering degree and working for Black+Decker. In 2021 she was elected as an honorary fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering for being a “tireless champion for engineering and vocational skills”.

Steph joined the BBC on work experience, working on Tomorrow’s World, before she secured employment as a current affairs researcher. She then went on to become the main producer for the Today programme on Radio 4, before becoming lead producer of business news on the BBC’s One, Six, and Ten O’clock news. She has since presented on BBC Radio 5 Live, was BBC Breakfast’s main business presenter, and presented CBBC’s Pocket Money Pitch.
Steph is a popular presenter, with credits including Newsround (2013), Shop Well For Less (2016-18), Watchdog (2018-19), Easy Ways to Live Well (2020), Inside John Lewis: Trouble at the Tills (2020), Walking With... (2021), and the aforementioned Steph’s Packed Lunch (2020-23).
She has also featured in popular programmes such as Celebrity Catchphrase (2021), The Masked Dancer (2022), Celebrity Bear Hunt (2025), and Blankety Blank (2025).
In 2023, she became the co-host of The Rest is Money podcast alongside Robert Peston, where they delve into the key challenges and opportunities facing today’s business world. Topics include tech investments, political upheaval, global markets, war, and net zero.
Steph is heavily involved in community and education projects and is a mentor for young people in her native Teesside, running workshops for schoolchildren around the North East. She is also a patron of the charity Rubies, supporting disadvantaged children.
She is also a former champion Irish dancer!
