Sir Steve Redgrave is the most decorated British rower, with five Olympic gold medallists in five successive games, nine world championship golds, and three Commonwealth golds to boot.
What makes his achievements even more remarkable is that he won despite a background of serious illnesses, including colitis and diabetes.
He was named the BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2000, was awarded a Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000, BBCâs Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011, and has been awarded 13 honorary doctorates from universities including Durham, St Andrewâs, and the University of London.
Since retiring from active competing, Sir Steve Redgrave has set up his own charity â The Steve Redgrave Trust â aimed at raising millions of pounds for several childrenâs charities. in 2006 he broke the record for the most money raised by an individual for the London Marathon, raising an amazing ÂŁ1.8 million.
Sir Steve was awarded an MBE in 1987, a CBE in 1997, and was then knighted in the New Yearâs Honours List in 2000.
Sir Steve Redgraveâs rowing career has seen him win a plethora of awards, medals, trophies, and titles, including:
– One Olympic Gold Medal in Coxless Four (2000)
– Three Olympic Gold Medals in Coxless Pair (1988, 1992, 1996)
– One Olympic Gold Medal in Coxed Four (1984)
– One Olympic Bronze Medal in Coxed Pair (1988)
– Three World Championship Gold Medals in Coxless Four (1997, 98, 99)
– Five World Championship Gold Medals in Coxless Pair (1987, 91, 93, 94, 95)
– One World Championship Silver Medal in Coxless Pair (1989)
– One World Championship Bronze Medal in Coxless Pair (1990)
– One World Championship Gold Medal in Coxed Pair (1986)
– One World Championship Silver Medal in Coxed Pair (1987)
He is also a triple gold medallist in single sculls, coxless pair, and coxed four at the 1986 Commonwealth Games, and a triple gold medallist in coxless four at the 1997, 1999, and 2000 world cup.
Sir Steve competed at the Henley Royal Regatta for over 20 years, winning the Queen Mothers Challenge Cup twice, the Stewardsâ Cup five times, the Silver Goblets eight times, the Diamond Sculls twice, Indoor World Rowing Championship once, and the Wingfield Sculls âAmateur Championship of the Thames and Gt Britainâ five times.
From 1991, the crews that rowed with Sir Steve were renowned for their consistent dominance, winning almost every time they raced. His most prominent rowing partner was Matthew Pinsent and at their peak, they were often considered the best pair in the world.
âThe best pair in the world today is Steve Redgrave and whomever Steve Redgrave choses to row with. The second best pair is Matthew Pinsent and whomever Matthew Pinsent chooses to row withâ.
What makes Sir Steveâs achievements even more impressive, is that they were achieved against a background of series illness. With careful supervision, discipline, and determination, he was able to train through such obstacles and achieve greatness.
In 1992 he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis jut before the Barcelona Olympics, and has since supported the Crohnâs and Colitis UK Charity. âThere were times when it seemed as if colitis would prevent me from reaching my goals but, with the right medical treatment, I was able to keep the illness under control and continue with my life.â
In 1997 he was diagnosed with diabetes. Having initially thought his career might be over, he sought the guidance of medical professionals, and proved that diabetes didnât have to mean the end of his athletic achievements. âI decided very early on that diabetes was going to live with me, not me live with diabetes.â
He was also severely dyslexic and struggled until he was diagnosed when he was 11 years old, but did not get the support in 1974 that he would have today. Dyslexia has continued to be a challenge for Steve to overcome in his post-competitive career, which has included speeches, talks, and presentations. âThe prospect never fills me with joy but I have learned to work with it to the best of my abilityâ.

He hasnât completely turned his back on rowing though, and has remained closely involved with the sport. He has mentored a number of the Team GB Rowing squad, as well as working with people outside of rowing, such as Sir Mo Farah.
In 2018, he became the Chinese national rowing squadâs first ever performance director. Tasked with increasing their medal tally, his expertise saw the squad gain its highest ever position in the medals table at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

Thank you very much for your contribution to IMIâs Senior Management Conference last week in Doha. Committing to us at such short notice, making the long trip out, and investing your time and energy to support us was hugely appreciate. The Q&A session was quite brilliant â and absolutely perfect for our theme âBecoming Most Admiredâ.
Mattew Huckin, Group HR Director, IMI plc.
Sir Steve was a truly memorable and inspirational speaker, our customers were both impressed and genuinely moved by his presentation, and I really enjoyed getting to meet him and hosting him on the stage.

I asked Steve Redgrave to an England coaching session. I think I learned more from him than anyone, and so did the players. What came over loud and clear is that he is such a determined individual. Steve shook a few England players, telling them just what you have to do to win gold medals and how hard it is. I think by the time the team started winning there were quite a few of them who thought they could become gold medallists too. They became completely obsessed about winning.
Sir Clive Woodward, Former England Rugby Club
Steve was fantastic! He went down an absolute storm â he was the highlight of the conference. His speech was very appropriate to the event and he stayed around and took photos with the attendees. He was a really nice guy and very easy to work with.

Gleeds was delighted when Sir Steve Redgrave joined as brand ambassador in 2005, helping to motivate staff and raise our profile in the property and construction industry. Sir Steve assists with many aspects of Gleedsâ work â from hosting networking events, to after-dinner speaking, to motivational sessions and international appearances â and is admired for his determination and professional position on the world-class stage. His inspiration and advice is welcomed by all, be it at a business lunch, supporting youth in education, out on the gold course, or encouraging our staff in rowing competitions.
Richard Steer, Senior Partner, Gleeds
The surprise element worked well for our team â the impact of welcoming such a high-profile âgoldenâ personality into our workplace was extremely positive. Steveâs presentation was an ideal blend of personal experience matched with reflections on our business environment. The parallels that exist between the challenges faced by an Olympic gold medallist and those of a technology function in a business information company are remarkable.
The effect of having Steve spend time with us, sharing his story and reliving his experiences, was inspirational and motivational. Steve Redgrave engaged our audience with his warm style and winning charisma and it was great that he was able to spend time informally with our team members after the presentation. We appreciated the generosity with his time and willingness to chat to people and join in photos.
Julian Prower, Leader, International Technology, D&B
Many, many thanks for a wonderful speech at our conference dinner. You had obviously worked hard to align your words with the theme of our conference. You had a remarkable effect on those present. Many people wrote that they valued your presentation and for me, personally, it was a highlight and made the hairs on my neck stand up. For our award winners to be presented with their trophies by our greatest Olympian was remarkable and memorable.
