Simona Halep began playing tennis when she was just four years old, being trained by her older brother, and by six years old she was practicing everyday. She moved to Bucharest at 16 to continue her tennis career, naming Justine Henin and Andrei Pavel as her role models.

Her first significant junior victory came in 2008 when she reached the junior’s semi-final at the Australian Open, and later in the year she won the ITF 10,000 in Bucharest, and the Trofeo Bonfiglio tournament.

Simona first broke into the senior world’s top 50 in 2012, and within two years she was in the top 10. She won her first six WTA titles in 2013 – a feet that was last achieved by Steffi Graf in 1986 when she won her first seven – resulting in her being named the WTA’s Most Improved Player, and ESPN Centre Court’s 2013 Most Improved Player.

As a singles player, she won two grand slams – the French Open (2018) and Wimbledon (2019) – made the final of the 2018 Australian Open, and the semi-final of the 2015 US Open.

She won over 20 single WTA tour titles, including Melbourne, Toronto, Dubai, Rome, Madrid, Indian Wells, Doha, Budapest, and Moscow, as well as playing for the Romanian Fed Cup team and Olympic team. She also made over a dozen other finals, finishing in the runner-up position.

As a doubles player she won the 2018 Shenzhen tournament and made the 2016 final of Montréal.

Simona Halep is arguably Romania’s most successful female tennis player, and the country has honoured her appropriately. Not only has she been given the Patriarchal Cross of Romania, but she also received the Order of the Star of Romania.
