Simon Brodkin initially studied medicine, and it was whilst working at Manchester city hospitals that he began performing stand-up comedy.

His first solo comedy show – Simon Brodkin: Everyone But Himself – came in 2006 at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

His comedian alter-ego Lee Nelson is known as a “cheerful chav”, frequently interacting with his audience, telling them about his life, asking questions, then replying with responses that reflect his world view, ignorance, and his stereotypically antisocial attitudes.

In 2013, “Lee Nelson” stood as a candidate in the South Shields by-election, but withdrew because it would mean a ban on his programmes being broadcast on the BBC.

Alongside his stand-up, he began appearing on television in 2003 in a series of shorts including From Baghdad to Balham on Channel 4, and also in Absolutely Fabulous for BBC One. He has also appeared in The Morning After Show (2005), Al Murray’s Multiple Personality Disorder (2007), The Wall (2008), Comedy Rocks With Jason Manford (2011), Let’s Dance for Comic Relief (2011), Another One Bites the Crust (2011), Live at the Apollo (2011), and on John Bishop’s 2013 Christmas show.

Simon’s comedy has seen him win and be nominated for several competitions and awards, including:

– The Writers’ Guild Award for Best Newcomer in Edinburgh

In reviewing his 2009 show, The Guardian stated that his “portrayal as a three-dimensional personality” and is a “likeable soul, with a dopily comprehensive lack of self-awareness”, finishing by saying “no one’s done it quite like Simon Brodkin”.

– Simon hijacked Donald Trump’s speech at the Trump Turnberry golf resort by handing out ‘Nazi golf balls’ to the crowd 2016.

– Invaded a speech by a Volkswagen representative at the Geneva Motor Show dressed as an engineer 2016.

– Handed Prime Minister Theresa May a mocked-up P45 form 2017.
