Robert Peston is the Political Editor for ITV, presenter of the politics show Peston, and The Rest Is Money podcast. He is also the founder of the education Charity Speakers For Schools.
He has written several critically acclaimed non-fiction and fiction books, including How to Run Britain (2024) on fixing the issues in the UK, and his thriller The Crash (2023).
For over a decade, he worked at the BBC as Economics Editor and Business Editor. He has also worked at the Financial Times as their Political Editor, Financial Editor, and Head of Investigations.
He has won over 30 awards for his journalism, including Specialist Journalist of the Year and Scoop of the Year from the Royal Television Society.
Robert Peston started his journalism career in 1983 at the Investors Chronicle, before joining The Independent on its launch in 1986. From 1989 to 1990 he worked for the Sunday Correspondent, before being appointed City Editor of The Independent on Sunday in 1990.
For the rest of the 1990s, he worked for The Financial Times, first as Political Editor where he memorably fell out with the then Downing Street Press Secretary Alistair Campbell. He also worked as their Banking Editor and Founder/Head of the Investigations Unit.
In 2000, he joined the online financial analysis service Quest as their Editorial Director, but he didn’t stop aside from his journalistic duties, becoming a contributor to The Spectator, The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Times, New Statesman, and the Sunday Telegraph.
Throughout his journalistic career, he has covered topics such as the potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan, the UK winter fuel crisis, Donald Trump’s presidency, UK/US tariffs, trade, and recessions.

In 2013, he became BBC News’ Economics Editor, continuing as Business Editor alongside until Kamal Ahmed took over that post in March 2014. He stayed at the BBC until January 2016, when he moved to ITV News, replacing Tom Brady as their Political Editor, interviewing the likes of then Prime Minster David Cameron.
Since 2016, he has presented his own political and current affairs programme, first called Peston On Sunday, but now simply titled Peston.
His journalistic talent and his personable nature has seen him a range of political and current affair documentaries and television programmes, such as The Great Euro Crash (2012), How China Fooled the World (2014), Quelle Catastrophe! France (2015), and The Great Chinese Crash (2016).

He received an Honorary Doctorate from Heriot-Watt University in 2010, and in 2011 he was honoured as a Fellow of Aberystwyth University.

Robert founded the educational charity Speakers For Schools in 2010. The charity organisers speakers from the worlds of business, media, the arts, politics, science, sports, and engineering to give talks for free in state schools.
“We aim to close the opportunity gap and level the playing field for all 11-19 year-olds from state schools and colleges by providing fair access to fully funded work experience and inspirational talks that will help them to reach their full career potential”.
He is also the Vice President of Hospice UK.
