Richard Hibbard is one of the most instantly recognisable Welsh rugby players of his generation.
He made his name at Ospreys, representing the club for a decade, before moving onto Gloucester. He also played for the Newport-Gwent Dragons, Swansea, and Aberavon Fighting Irish, as well as the Welsh national team.
Rugby was part of Richard Hibbard’s life even as a child, with him playing rugby union at age grade levels in Port Talbot, including Aberavon Quins RFC, and Taibach RFC. He went on to play at senior level for Taibach, Aberavon RFC (making 3 appearances), and Swansea (scoring 65 points in 88 appearances).
He also played for Aberavon Fighting Irish, Gloucester, Ospreys, and the Dragons RFC. All in all, he scored:
– 5 points in 3 appearances for Aberavon
– 55 points in 100 appearances for Gloucester
– 50 points in 175 appearances for Ospreys
– 3 points in 59 appearances for Dragons

He picked up a number of titles through his club career, including making three Challenge Cup Finals, and winning one, with Gloucester, and for the Ospreys, claiming three league titles, winning the EDF cup, and the LV Cup, and was named the player’s player of the season.
He made his debut for the Welsh team in 2006, making 38 appearances in all for his country, scoring 10 points. He was named as part of the British & Irish Lions squad for the 2013 tour to Australia and played in all three test matches, with the team winning the series.
Throughout his time in his home team, he played in two Six Nations championships, was named man of the series, and carried out tours of the USA, Canada, Argentina, Australia, and South Africa.
He announced his retirement in 2022, but did play for the Dragons until the following season.
In recent years, Richard has become a successful entrepreneur and business owner. He has two successful restaurants in the Aberavon shopping centre and at the Aberavon beach, as well as his own brand of rum…Mortal Bunny Rum, which is now sold in all Welsh Tesco’s, and some Morrisons and M&S in Wales and England. He has also created ThumpR Drinks, the first energy and recovery drink on the market to contain CBD, turmeric, caffeine, amino acids, and B Vitamins, but without any sugar or calories.
However, Richard has not stepped entirely away from the world of rugby. In early 2024 he was appointed the Chief Executive Officer for Wales Rugby League, focusing mainly on creating partnerships to support the development of the sport at all levels.

Richard Hibbard is now a popular speaker, relaying stories and anecdotes from his playing career, as well as advice on how to be a high performer, fierce competitor, and a champion player.

Richard was absolutely superb. Very professional but most importantly, a great laugh with some real honest stories. Everyone had a blast.

What Richard has achieved both as a player and a businessman has been impressive. We believe the attributes and characteristics he brings are aligned to our vision and cultural journey. He knows what being involved in an elite environment looks like and the important of a strong balance sheet to support this.
