Professor Noreena Hertz graduated from University College London in economics and philosophy when she was just 18, before gaining her Masters in finance at 23 years old. With original plans to work in the film industry, Noreena soon took up a consulting position to the World Bank Group. Disillusioned by what she perceived as failings in regard to the post-Soviet reform, she quit and started working for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
She then went on to gain a PhD in economics and business, with her thesis covering ‘Russian Business Relationships in the Wake of Reform’. Her expertise has seen her work as a professor at a variety of establishments, including Professor of Globalisation, Sustainability, and Finance at the Rotterdam School of Management, Duisenberg School of Finance, Erasmus University, and the University of Cambridge. Since 2014, she has taught at University College London on the intersection of economics and geopolitics.
By the age of 29 she was working with the governments of Egypt, Israel, Jordan, and Palestine on the role economics could play in the Middle East peace process.
Noreena is very passionate, and has been involved in a number of campaigns on topics such as:
– Live 8: cancel the debt of the world’s poorest countries
– Make Poverty History
– Mayday for Nurses
Noreena is the author of several bestselling books on finance and the wider economic world, including:
The Silent Takeover: Global Capitalism and the Death of Democracy (2003). Noreena brilliantly reveals how corporations across the world are manipulating and pressuring governments by both legal and illegal means; how protest is becoming a more effective political weapon than the vote; and how corporations are taking over state responsibility for everything from technology to healthcare.
IOU: The Debt Threat and Why We Must Defuse It (2005). Noreen tackles Third World Debt as a situation that must be resolved if we are ever to see global stability. It is a story of greed but also of vulnerability, or power asymmetries and misuse of influence and careless leaders.
The Lonely Century: A Call to Reconnect (2021) which was named ‘Book of the Year’ by The Daily Telegraph, Wired, and El Mundo. The book combines a decade of research with first-hand reporting. Noreena takes readers on a journey, exploring how our increasing dependency on technology can radically change the workplace, and how this can damage our communities and make us more lonely than ever.
Eyes Wide Open: How to Make Smart Decisions in a Confusion World (2013). This is Noreena’s practical, cutting-edge guide to help readers cut through the data deluge and make smarter and better choices. She particularly focusses on the extent to which the biggest decisions we make are often based on flawed information, corrupted data, a lack of self-knowledge, and insufficient scrutiny of others.
She has regularly contributed to printed publications, such as The Guardian, The New York Times, The Financial Times, The Telegraph, Economico Valor, The Irish Independent, Kosovarja Magazine, Republica Magazine, Elle, Psychology Today, Vogue, The Washington Post, Die Zeit, El Pais, the South China Morning Post, and The Wall Street Journal. She has written about everything from finance to business, AI to democracy, women’s sport to loneliness, and the future of work.
She has also make frequent television appearances around the world such as BBC’s Question Time, China’s CWTV, and CBS’ This Morning. She also hosted her own radio show on Sirius XM – the US’ biggest radio network), and served as ITV News’ economics editor.
Noreena is frequently sought-after around the world as a keynote speaker, and has experience talking for TED, Google Zeitgeist, and at the World Economic Forum in Davos. She has been seen sharing platforms with the likes of Professor Stephen Hawking, President Bill Clinton, and Jane Goodall.
AI: Beyond the Hype: How AI Will Transform Business and Society and What This Means For Us All
AI is already transforming business, government, and healthcare, but how radical will the transformation be in economic and societal terms? Who will be the winners and who will lose out? What can businesses do to ensure they thrive in this new age? What will happen to individuals? Will AI take our jobs, make us smarter, or more stupid?
The New Global Landscape: How to succeed in these radically different times
President Trump back in office, Russia and Iran increasingly cosy, right-wing populists in power across the globe, China continuing to face challenges, trade tariffs point to shoot up, war continuing to rage in the Middle East.
The rules of the game have changed; the post-Cold War democratic consensus that has dominated the past 35 years has irrevocably broken down. In this keynote, Noreena helps her audiences make sense of this radically different business, geopolitical, and political environment, and offers a roadmap for how they can adapt to navigate these shifts to ensure they thrive in it.
Generation K: How to Manage, Engage, and Inspire Your Post-Millennial Employees and Consumers
Today, Generation K (16-26 year olds) make up almost a third of employees, and has almost £1 trillion in purchasing power. Yet how much do we really know them? Did you know, for example, that they are the loneliness generation on record, and the most anxious? That they are profoundly worried about their economic futures, and are reconfiguring their purchasing and workplace behaviours accordingly?
Noreena helps leaders to both understand Generation K but also how to connect with, inspire, engage, and retain them, whether as employees or customers.
Breaking Barriers, Building Futures: How to Shatter the Glass Ceiling and Make an Impact
Noreena is one of the rare women in Europe to serve on the boards of multiple U.S multi-billion dollar companies; she is also a bestselling author, renowned academic, and fearless activist. Noreena shares personal stories and reflections from her own remarkable journey – how she overcame challenges, stayed true to herself, and forged her own path in male-dominated industries.
