Professor Brian Cox is one of the most recognised presenters on British TV. A prominent experimental physicist, he has captivated audiences in their millions by making science engaging and accessible to millions. With over 4.2 million social media followers, he has passionate about translating complex science topics into more manageable and understandable pieces.
He has written many best-selling books and has presented documentaries including The Planets, Forces of Nature, and Wonders of the Universe.
As well as his media commitments, Brian is a Professor of Particle Physics at Manchester University, is a key figure in the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, and serves as the Royal Society Professor for Public Engagement In Science.
His popularity has seen him become a highly sought-after public speaker, with experience presenting for TED, and at the World Economic Forums in Davos and China. He has a natural ability to engage, inform, and entertain.
He was appointed an OBE in the 2010 Honours List, and then a CBE in the 2020 list for services to the promotion of science.
MUSIC
Before he became a television star, Professor Brian Cox was a keyboard player with the rock band Dare, releasing two albums in 1988 and 1991 respectively. He then joined D:Ream, a dance act who had several hits in the UK charts. As an “obsessive fan” of the electronic band Orchestral Manoeuvrers in the Dark, he wrote the forward to their 2018 biography, OMD: Pretending to See the Future.
He hasn’t completely forgetting his roots in music, and still performs sporadically, even appearing at Glastonbury Festival in 2024 with D:Ream.

SCIENCE
Brian has publicly stated that it was the book Cosmos by Carl Sagan that inspired the 12-year-old Brian to become a physicist. This aim saw him study physics at the University Manchester, gaining a degree in high-energy particle physics.
He has previously held a Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council advanced research fellowship, and held a Royal Society University Research Fellowship.

Brian has received a number of awards and accolades for his efforts to popularise science. He was elected an international fellow of The Explorers Club in 2022; received the British Association’s Lord Kelvin Award in 2006; won Best Presenter at the Royal Television Society 2011; and the Broadcasting Press Guild Awards for Best Performer, and Best Documentary Series in 2010.
He was presented the honorary award of Doctor of the University from the University of Huddersfield by Sir Patrick Stewart in 2012; he was awarded the Institute of Physics President’s Medal 2012; an honorary degree of Doctor of the University by the Open University 2012; the Michael Faraday Prize of the Royal Society 2012; and a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2016.
