Political Editor Nick Watt has worked in national journalism for over 30 years, reporting on UK and EU politics. In 2016, he became the Political Editor for BBC’s Newsnight.
Before joining the BBC, he worked as The Guardian’s Chief Political Correspondent, and as its European Editor based in Brussels. He started his career at The Times, working as Political Correspondent, and Ireland Correspondent based in Belfast.
Through his career, he has covered seven UK general elections, two Scottish referendums, two UK-wide referendums.
In recent years, Nick ha gained extensive experience speaking at and chairing events in the political sphere and beyond.
In 2012, he appeared on Press Gazette’s list of the ‘top 50 political reporters’, at number 14.

Since moving into full-time broadcasting, Nick Watt has become a familiar figure across BBC television and radio, reporting on UK politics. He has seen five Prime Ministers come and go, regularly appears on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, the World at One, PM, and the World Tonight, as well as on the Westminster Hour on Radio 4.
Early on in his career, he worked as a political reporter based in Belfast for The Times as their Ireland Correspondent, covering the initial stages of the peace process. He has also worked for The Guardian as European editor and chief political correspondent, and was the acting political editor for The Observer.

He has been a panellist on BBC1’s Sunday Politics presented by Andrew Neil, and has provided humorous summaries of political events for This Week.
In 2016, he joined Newsnight on BBC2, replacing Allegra Stratton. He was once called “one of the most trusted, authoritative, and engaging journalists in the country” by The Guardian employee Ian Katz.
As well as UK and EU politics, he has covered the wars in Kosovo and Iraq, and travelled around Eastern Europe examining the impact of the EU on new members states. He often credits Margaret Thatcher’s downfall for his debut in political journalism, describing her arrival on the day of her resignation in 1990 as his first big job as a trainee.
His lively broadcasting style has won widespread praise for providing illuminating insights into what goes on behind the scenes.
His extensive experience has made him a highly sought-after keynote speaker, chair, moderator, and host at events requiring an insider’s view on the political issues of the time.
