Michelle Collins is a celebrated actress and television presenter, best known for her role as Cindy Beale in the long-running BBC show EastEnders. This role made her a household name and one of the biggest starts on British TV in the 1990s.
Showing a passion for performance from an early age, Michelle attended Camden School for Girls, where her creative spirit flourished. Her formal acting training began at the prestigious Royal Court Youth Theatre, where she honed her craft alongside other budding talents. This foundational experience would pave the way for her versatile career in acting and entertainment.
Away from her acting career, Michelle has spoken openly about her battles with eating disorders and mental health.
Before becoming a star on television, Michelle Collins’ first foray into showbusiness came via music, when she worked alongside Squeeze, and Mari Wilson and the Wilsations.
But then her head turned to acting, and the rest was history. She landed roles in a range of 1980s shows, such as The Bill and Bergarac, as well as the BBC play Pressures. It was whilst in Pressures that EastEnders producer Julia Smith spotted her and asked her to audition for the role of Cindy Beale, who was to feature in 11 episodes. The role was such a hit with fans that her contract was extended, and she spent over 10 years, on and off, as Cindy. She returned to the role in 2023.
After leaving the soap, she appeared in Real Women, Sunburn, Daylight Robbert, The Sleeper, Uprising, and Two Thousand Acres of Sky for the BBC and ITV. One notable performance came in The Illustrated Mum which was adapted from Jacqueline Wilson’s children book. It was screened in 2003 and went on to win an Emmy Award and two BAFTAs.
Other credits include Coronation Street, Morgan’s Boy, Running Wild, Hidden City, Lloyd and the Hill, Single, Ella and the Mothers, French and Saunders, The Last Detective, and Doctor Who.
