Luke Greenbank burst onto the competitive scene in 2014 at the Summer Youth Olympics in Nanjing where he took a gold and a bronze medal in the 4x100m freestyle and 200m backstroke respectively. The following year he took home a bronze from the World Junior Championships in Singapore.
Luke is part of the special group of athletes who have won medals in their junior career, and in all of the major senior competitions.
In 2015, Luke competed in the inaugural European Games in Baku, winning two gold medals, breaking a new Junior World record in the 200m backstroke, and winning two silver medals.
His debut Commonwealth games in 2018 saw him win a silver as part of the Men’s 4x100m medley relay, a medal he upgraded to gold at the 2022 games. He then went on to win his first World Championship medals at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships, where he took home a bronze in the 200m backstroke and a gold in the 4x100m medley relay.
His first Olympic games was at Tokyo 2020 (postponed to 2021 due to the covid pandemic), and he went home with a silver in the men’s 4x100m medley relay team, and a bronze in the 200m backstroke.
Luke had a stellar year in 2022 where he won medals in all of the competitions he competed in – the World Aquatics Championships, the Commonwealth Games, the British Swimming Championships, and the European Aquatics Championships.
After finishing in second place at the 2024 Aquatics GB Swimming Championships, Luke recorded a time which qualified him for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Sadly, even though he placed first in his heat in the 200m backstroke, he was disqualified for staying underwater past the 15-metre mark.
Overall, Luke Greenbank has won an unbelievable:
– British Championships: 6 gold, 6 silver, and 1 bronze
– Commonwealth Games: 1 gold and 1 silver
– European Games: 2 golds and 2 silvers
– European Championships (SC): 1 silver and 1 bronze
– European Championships (LC): 1 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze

Luke’s impressive medal tally and heaps of experience have made him a role model for prospective athletes. In 2021 it was announced that he would put on a number of workshops alongside Swim England’s Sharing Success, focussing on the technical, tactical, and physical elements of each swimming stroke.
