At 23, Lauren Murrell was given a 20% chance of surviving acute myeloid leukaemia, weeks before her final law school exams.

Her sister, Sarah, became her stem-cell donor and saver her life, after Lauren had spent months in protective isolation enduring chemotherapy and total body irradiation. After two years of intensive treatment, she returned to law school to complete her degree and built a legal career in London and New York.

Years later, whilst working as a lawyer in the British Virgin Islands, Lauren lived through the direct impact of Hurricane Irma, a catastrophic category five storm that left her stranded for five days, before being rescued and evacuated from the island.

Back in the UK, she left law and became an entrepreneur, co-founding By Sarah with her sister, an award-winning skincare brand born from the products Sarah made for Lauren’s cancer-ravaged skin. It is now stocked by Ocado, Planet Organic, and Macmillan Cancer Support.

More About Lauren Murrell

Lauren Murrell began studying for a Bachelor of Laws degree before being diagnosed with leukaemia. Following treatment, she returned to her legal studies two years later and completed her degree, graduating with Distinction. Prior to completing her law degree, Lauren earned a Master’s degree in Geography at the University of Oxford, graduating with First Class Honours. During her time at Oxford, she received a Hertford College Award for achieving a First, as well as the A.J. Herbertson Proximae Prize for the best Human Geography dissertation. She was also shortlisted for the prestigious Michael von Clemm Fellowship at Harvard University.
