Ken Bruce MBE is a multi-award-winning voice of British radio, with a broadcasting career spanning over four decades. For over 30 years, he was a staple of BBC Radio 2’s daytime schedule, attracting millions of loyal listeners to his mid-morning show.
He is widely credited with shaping the tone of British pop radio.
Ken is especially known for hosting the popular daily quiz PopMaster and his down-to-earth on-air presence.
In 2023, he made headlines across the UK media when he moved to commercial radio station Greatest Hits Radio, continuing his role as one of the country’s most listened-to daytime broadcasters.
Ken Bruce was born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland, where he developed an early appreciation for music and broadcasting. He attended Hutchesons’ Grammar School, a well-regarded independent school in the city. Later, he trained as a chartered accountant – a path he initially pursued but decided wasn’t for him. He switched to working for a car hire firm, initially washing and delivering cars before moving into management.
With a deep love of music, Ken has always been fascinated with the radio. In his spare time, he volunteered at the Hospital Broadcasting Service in Glasgow, which offered him his first real experience behind a microphone. This early involvement proved pivotal, sparking a passion for presenting that would ultimately shape his future.Â

Ken’s broadcasting career at the BBC began in 1977 when he joined BBC Radio Scotland as a staff and continuity announcer for BBC TV. He quickly demonstrated a natural flair for radio, becoming a regular voice on the station and moving into presenting roles. By the early 1980s, Ken had become a familiar presence on BBC Radio 2, where he initially covered various late-night and weekend slots before taking on more prominent daytime shows.
In 1986, Ken was handed the coveted mid-morning show on Radio 2. He briefly handed it over in 1990 but returned permanently in 1992. He held this slot for the following 31 years, and the show became one of the most popular in the UK, consistently attracting millions of loyal listeners.
With a warm, intelligent and understated style, Ken created a comforting yet entertaining presence during the late morning hours, blending music, conversation, interviews, and good humour in a way that connected with audiences across generations.
One of the standout features of Ken’s show was the very popular PopMaster feature, the daily music quiz. Combining nostalgic music trivia with a good-natured competitive edge, it became an unmissable part of the national listening routine. Ken also championed new music alongside the classics, hosting countless live sessions, album showcases, and celebrity interviews and offering a consistent platform for emerging and legendary artists.
Ken was also a familiar voice on the BBC’s Eurovision Song Contest coverage, serving as the UK’s radio commentator for over 30 years. His encyclopaedic knowledge of the contest and gently sardonic delivery made him a fan favourite.
His departure from BBC Radio 2 in 2023, after more than four decades at the BBC, marked the end of a broadcasting era. He moved to Greatest Hits Radio, hosting on weekdays from 10 am to 1 pm and including the iconic PopMaster quiz.
Bruce’s excellence has earned him numerous high-profile awards, including:
– In the 2023 King’s Birthday Honours, he was appointed MBE for services to radio, autism awareness, and charity, recognising both his broadcasting and philanthropic efforts
– In 2008, he was inducted into the Radio Academy Hall of Fame, cementing his status as a broadcasting legend
– At the 2024 TRIC (Television & Radio Industries Club) Awards, Bruce achieved a rare “hat-trick”, winning Best Radio Personality, Best Radio Show, and Best Daytime Show, triumphing over both radio and television contenders
In addition to these major accolades, Bruce has been nominated multiple times for Best Interview, notably for his memorable discussions with Noel Gallagher and Cher.

Ken regularly hosts PopMaster-themed live events and corporate quiz nights around the UK. Through the official PopMaster site, he offers bespoke team-building entertainment at both corporate and private functions, where he presents his famous music quiz in person.Â
In addition to corporate gigs, Ken has participated in charity fundraising events—most notably a “PopMaster Quiz with Ken Bruce” held in June 2025 at Thomley, a Buckinghamshire facility supporting disabled people, to raise funds for their work.
