Kay Firth-Butterfield is a lawyer, professor, keynote speaker, and author specialising in the intersection of artificial intelligence, international relations, ethics, and business.
Previously a Barrister-at-Law, Kay is now the CEO of Good Tech Advisory, an Advisory Board Member for Fathom.org, Swiss Re, Earth Species Project, and Aboitiz Data Innovation.
Kay has been a leader at the forefront of responsible AI since 2014; she was the first C-Suite appointee in AI Ethics in the world, was a contributor to the Asilomar Principles, Vice Chair of the IEEE Global Initiative for Ethically Aligned Design, and the inaugural Head of AI and Machine Learning at the World Economic Forum.
She has worked as an adjunct professor for St Mary’s University School of Law and the University of Texas Law School in Cyber Law and Cyber Warfare, and AI and Other Emerging Technologies, respectively.
Kay is now an internationally highly sought-after speaker on AI, educational technology, governmental use of AI, ethics, and digital transformation.
Kay Firth-Butterfield’s career started in law as a barrister and part-time judge. But over time, she began researching the future of law, particularly the impact of AI and the intersection of AI and policy.

Kay helps businesses and leaders to create governance boards, educating everyone from board members to c-suite, and staff, to procure frontier tech tools and understand the essential place of diversity in a frontier tech workforce.
Recently, she has served as a distinguished scholar at the Robert S Strauss Centre for International Security and Law, looking at the use of AI in international relations and law, as well as a senior research fellow at the University of Texas.
She has worked alongside the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Aarts, Manufacturers, and Commerce. Lucid AI as Chief Officer of the Ethics Advisory Panel, and as an advisory for the Foundation for Responsible Robots.
Kay has advised think tanks, nonprofits, and governments on artificial intelligence in relation to ethics, law and policy.
