More About John Robins

John Robins began performing comedy in the mid-2000s, quickly earning recognition on the live circuit for his intelligent, narrative-driven style. His work often blends acerbic observational humour with deeply personal anecdotes, delivered with a self-deprecating charm that has become his hallmark.

Over the years, John has built a reputation as a thoughtful and inventive comic, with acclaimed solo shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. His 2017 show The Darkness of Robins earned widespread critical acclaim and went on to win the prestigious Edinburgh Comedy Award (formerly the Perrier Award). This triumph marked a career-defining moment, placing John firmly among the leading voices in British stand-up.

John is becoming a familiar face on our TV screens, having starred in much loved comedy shows such as Live at the Apollo, Mock the Week, Drunk History, Alan Davies: As Yet Untitled, Live at the Comedy Store, and Stand-Up Central.

John Robins | Radio & Podcasting

Beyond the live stage, John has reached a broad audience through his radio and podcast work. Alongside fellow comedian Elis James, he co-hosted the long-running Elis James and John Robins show on Radio X, where their mix of quick-fire banter, imaginative features, and good-natured camaraderie built a dedicated fanbase. The pair have gained a reputation for their humorous, but often candid, honest, and sensitive discussions, including that of mental health, partnering with CALM and Mind. The show’s popularity led to a BBC Radio 5 Live commission in 2019, expanding their audience further.

Their partnership also thrives in podcast form, with The Elis James and John Robins Podcast consistently ranking highly in comedy charts. Together, they have created a distinctive comedic double act: Elis as the affable everyman and John as the irritable perfectionist, a dynamic that resonates with listeners across the UK and beyond.

The podcast was an immediate success, receiving over 500,000 downloads a month. The show moved over to Radio X and then BBC Radio 5 Live.

John has also appeared on radio shows including The News Quiz, The Now Show, and Word of Mouth. Other podcasts he has featured on include Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Theatre Podcast, The Adam Buxton Podcast, and The Comedian’s Podcast.

John regularly speaks to corporate audiences about his life, and particular his challenges and struggles with mental health.

Companies he has worked with include Asda, the BBC, BT Sport, Ford, and Mini.

His memoir – Thirst – is due out in May 2026, which documents his battle with alcohol and alcoholism.
