“A much needed fresh comic voice from Northern Ireland at a time when we most need to hear it” – Jarlath Regan
Comedian John Meagher was nominated for the BBC New Comedy Award and the Irish Comedian of the Year. He was also a finalist for the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year and Leicester Square Theatre New Comedian of the Year.
By the time he was 17, John Meagher was an Irish Champion Martial Artist and competing at the World Karate Championships before training in boxing, Muay Thai kickboxing, BJJ, and mixed martial arts. Injuries started to take their toll, so he decided to swap being punched in the head for telling jokes.

Approaching comedy as an athlete was a steep rise for him, but he quickly gained notoriety on the stand-up circuit for “Grabbing the gig by the scruff of the neck” (Chortle).
In 2022, he was the runner up for the prestigious Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year, before winning the Panel Prize at the 2022 Edinburgh Fringe Festival as part of ‘Best in Class’, the working-class stand-up showcase.
This success has gained John a following for his writing and bold performances and seen him recognised as one of Ireland’s top new comedians.
As well as his own gigs, John has supported legendary Irish comedian Patrick Kielty on his five-month long ‘Borderlines’ tour, and has worked all the major UK and Irish comedy clubs.
He has appeared on radio shows including Loose Ends, Oliver Callan Bins the Border, Newsquick, and Divils Own. He is also the host of The John Meagher Show podcast, which seems him talk about life, the universe, and everything in between.

John is a very sharp comedian…with a subtlety to his stuff I didn’t have (in younger days).
