Joe Marler is a former international rugby player, is now a broadcaster, podcast host, and mental health campaigner.
One of the most recognisable faces in international rugby, Joe is a two-time Premiership champion who has 95 caps for the Senior England team.
Joe is the presenter of the Joe Marler’s Things People Do podcast, where, alongside his co-host Joe Fordyce, he meets ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Thanks to its popularity, the podcast has gone out on tour.
He released his biography Loose Head: Confessions of an (Un)professional Rugby Player in 2020, which documented his extraordinary life as well as a detailed account of his personal mental health struggles.
Joe is very passionate about mental health and is an advocate and ambassador for CALM. In 2021, he teamed up with Sky Sports to launch Big Boys Don’t Cry, a sensitive documentary which followed Joe as he travelled up and down the UK, learning how other people manage their mental wellbeing.
Joe Marler started playing rugby when he was just 11 years old, going on to play for the Eastbourne Sharks, Sussex Under 14-18, London & South East, and Haywards Heath.
He joined the Harlequins Academy in 2008 and made his first debut in the 2009-10 season, providing him a “learning curve that has allowed [him] to experience all the tricks of the trade at prop”. Joe stayed at the Harlequins for his entire career, making 286 appearances, and scoring 55 points!
While at Harlequins, he won the 2012 and 2021 Premiership Rugby titles, the EPCR Challenge Cup 2011, and was runner-up at the EPCR Challenge Cup 2016.

In addition to playing at club level, Joe played for the England U20, making 13 appearances, before joining the senior team in 2012. Over his 12-year international career, Joe made nearly 100 appearances, regularly appeared at the annual Six Nations tournament, and won a silver medal at the 2019 World Cup and a bronze medal at the 2023 World Cup.
While playing with England, he won three Six Nations Championships in 2016, 2017, and 2020 and an Autumn Nations Cup in 2020.
Initially known for his colourful and creative hairstyles, the prop soon he let his scrummaging and powerful physical presence on the field do the talking, establishing himself as a regular in the senior squad.
In 2017, Joe was selected or the British and Irish Lions’ Tour to New Zealand; and then in 2019 he was recruited into the Barbarians squad.
He announced his retirement from club and international rugby in November 2024.
Joe is the co-host of the Joe Marler’s Things People Do podcast alongside Joe Fordyce. Together, they have met astronauts, marine biologists, teachers, cheesemakers, prison guards, and everyone in between, and heard stories that made them laugh until they cried, and inspired them.
Since his retirement, Joe has become a popular sports guest speaker for Fireside Chats and Q&A’s. Known for his engaging and humorous style, rich with personal anecdotes and life lessons, he speaks passionately about mental health, particularly male mental health, drawing from his own experiences and providing insightful and inspiring talks.
