Born in London, Jimmy Carr studied social science and political science at Cambridge before working in marketing. Feeling “miserable” in the job, he took a course in neuro-linguistic programming, and within a month of finishing, he was out performing stand-up comedy.

COMEDY

Jimmy is one of the best-known international comedians and has released eight comedy DVDs, selling over 1.2 million copies.

He has performed all over the country, including at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where he sold out an entire month’s performances in 2003 by just the second day. By the end of this year, The Observer listed him as one of the 50 funniest acts in British comedy. He has also had the honour of performing in front of the Royal Family at the prestigious Royal Variety Performance on numerous occasions.

Unsurprisingly, he is the recipient of a plethora of top comedy awards, including LAFTA Awards for Best Stand Up, Funniest Man and Funniest DVD, Nuts Awards for Funniest Comic and Best Stand Up, a Zoo Award for Funniest Man, a Time Out Award for Best Stand Up, and a British Comedy Award for Best Stand Up Tour.

However, his comedy hasn’t been without controversy. With his sense of humour leaning into the dark at times, his jokes have been deemed offensive and hurtful. But it is this deadpan, unabridged humour that makes him so popular with audiences around the world.

Jimmy’s fame has led him to present a number of television shows, such as Jimmy Carr Destroys Art (2022), 8 Out of 10 Cats (2005-2020) and the spinoff 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown (2011-present), Big Fat Quiz of Everything (2016-2022), Roast Battle UK (2018-2020), I Literally Just Told You (2021-2022), and Your Face or Mine (2017-2019).

He is also a prominent guest on popular comedy, quiz, and panel programmes, including QI (2003-2022), A League of Their Own (2010-2022), I Can See Your Voice (2021-2022) – where he sits on the judging panel, Top Gear (2004-2006), Blankety Blank (2020-2022), The Last Leg (2021), The One Show (2021), This Morning (2019), and The Graham Norton Show (2008-2013).

Whilst born and bred in the UK, his popularity has seen him perform around the world, and he was the first UK comedian to sign a deal with Netflix in 2015, where he has since released several special stand-up gigs. He has been a familiar face on US chat shows, including The Tonight Show, Late Night With Conan O’Brien and The Late Late Show.

He is also a frequent guest on radio shows and podcasts, such as The Fred MacAulay Show, Flight of the Conchords, The Diary of a CEO with Steven Barlett, Griefcast, Desert Island Discs, The Chris Moyles Show, Bob Saget’s Here For You, and The Comedian’s Comedian.

Jimmy has also turned his talents to writing and is the published author of three books. He co-wrote Only Joking: What’s So Funny About Making People Laugh? In 2006, and The Naked Jape: Uncovering the Hidden World of Jokes in 2007 with Lucy Greeves. These were followed up in 2021 with Before & Laugher, his Sunday Times best selling memoir.
